Electrification alone will not get New Zealand to net zero by 2050. A large part of our economy will need to be decarbonised via alternative fuels and technologies and, to do so, we will need to generate renewable energy at scale. Offshore wind farms can help achieve that level of generation with less social, topographical, resource, and infrastructure limitations than onshore projects. International offshore windfarm developer, BlueFloat Energy, has clear and ambitious long-term strategy to maximise New Zealand’s renewable resources that will result in around 8 GW of built offshore wind capacity. Energy Partner Scott B Thompson and Senior Associate Natasha Hood sat down with Nathan Turner (BlueFloat Energy’s Country Manager New Zealand), to zero in on the opportunities and challenges of developing offshore wind farms in New Zealand. We enjoyed hosting and participating in this INFINZ lunchtime seminar, discussing New Zealand's first year of mandatory climate statements. Partner Lloyd Kavanagh was joined by External Reporting Board CEO April Mackenzie, Financial Markets Authority - New Zealand Head of Reporting Jacco Moison, Harbour Asset Management, Senior Manager Responsible Investing Sue Walker and Lead Partner Sustainability & Assurance PwC, Jonathan Skilton, for an insightful discussion about the initial impressions of the first two cohorts of climate statements filed on the CRD register. #crdregister #climatedisclosures #helpingshapenewzealandsfuture
First Impressions of the Climate-Related Disclosures Statements. We need to be ‘comfortable about being uncomfortable- at least for a while’ and ‘if you don’t truly engage in climate reporting this is going to be more painful’ were two key messages from the sold-out lunch discussing Aotearoa’s New Zealand’s first Climate-related Disclosure Statements. Great to hear the positivity, encouragement, and recognition supporting the huge effort taken by most with their first disclosures. With a high degree of variability observed, the panellists recommended areas of focus be: NZ CS 3 (especially methods and assumptions, materiality), understanding the impact (and resilience improvements) to the business, climate adaptation, internal verification, and being clearer on the links between climate and capital deployment. INFINZ is grateful for the support from MinterEllisonRuddWatts, in particular Partner Lloyd Kavanagh who facilitated, and presenters April Mackenzie, Jacco Moison, Jonathan Skilton and Sue Walker. We were pleased to partner with Financial Services Council New Zealand on its latest research report 'Money and You: Consumer Resilience and the Road to Prosperity', which shows that short-term financial strain is threatening emergency and retirement savings. Partner Lloyd Kavanagh, who contributed to the report commented, “it’s undeniably tough out there, and people are prioritising immediate needs over future security. This is exacerbated in tough economic times like these, as finances are stretched and saving for retirement can often take a back seat, but it continues to be important to build a nest egg if you can.” Read the report: https://hubs.la/Q02NxsGs0 Read the media release: https://hubs.la/Q02NxsGs0 #financialservices #kiwisaver #FSC24 #helpingshapenewzealandsfuture
Today we launch our newest research report 'Money and You: Consumer Resilience and the Road to Prosperity', which shows that short-term financial strain is threatening emergency and retirement savings. Quick takeaways include: - 94% of New Zealanders are concerned about financial issues, with top concerns being cost of living, inflation and house prices. - While some New Zealanders can cut back on non-essential purchases like takeaways and treats, others are confronting difficult decisions, such as whether to heat their homes (24%) or afford essential medications (16%). We continue to call for a comprehensive review of KiwiSaver to ensure the scheme is fit for purpose to deliver Kiwis a dignified retirement. See our media release here: https://hubs.la/Q02NxG7t0 Access the full report here: https://hubs.la/Q02NxsGs0 With thanks to research partner MinterEllisonRuddWatts.
