IRANZ - Independent Research Association of New Zealand promotes communication among member organisations and represents the collective interests of members by undertaking activities aimed at creating a positive operating environment for Independent Research Organisations in New Zealand.
Independent Research Organisations (IROs) carry out research, science, and/or technology developments with ownerships and governance independent of Government. They are not part of a university, government, Crown Research Institute, or hospital, but usually have close working relationships with one or more of these entities. They are recognised by the government for doing work that is nationally significant in a range of scientific fields. While many IRO research projects are government-funded, IROs are generally recognised by both government and the private sector for their innovation and agility in providing solutions to solve important problems in New Zealand.
IROs have a variety of ownership structures including industry, private, public, and community. Members include Aqualinc Research, Bragato Research Institute, BRANZ, Cawthron Institute, HERA, LASRA, Lincoln Agritech, Mackie Research, Malaghan Institute, Medical Research Institute of New Zealand, NZ Institute for Minerals to Materials Research, Motu Economic and Public Policy Research, PlantTech Research Institute, Titanium Industry Development Association (TiDA), Verum Group, WSP Research and Innovation Centre, and Xerra Earth Observation Institute.
