As climate change continues to impact wine regions in New Zealand and worldwide, grape production faces unprecedented challenges including peaks of drier conditions. To sustain future grape production and maintain wine quality, it is crucial to explore innovative strategies that enhance grapevine resilience.  Trichoderma is a genus of fungi naturally found in soils across New Zealand. Known for their ability to promote plant health, these fungi have been extensively studied for their role in biological control, where they suppress plant pathogens. However, recent research has revealed that Trichoderma species can do much more than protect plants from disease. They also have the potential to enhance plant growth and resilience, particularly under stressful conditions like drought. Grapevines, especially those grown in regions prone to soil water deficits, could greatly benefit from the support of these beneficial fungi. Applying Trichoderma around grapevine roots has the potential to boost soil biology, supporting vine productivity in the face of limited soil moisture. An increasing number of families are choosing to live multi-generationally in Aotearoa New Zealand. New research seeks to understand the challenges and identify the opportunities of designing and building fit-for-purpose, multi-generational housing to suit our diverse population. The project is led by The Urban Advisory and researchers Dr Natalie Allen, Dr Kate Bryson, Dr Charmaine 'Ilaiū Talei, Jade Kake, Jacqueline Paul and Emma McInnes. 🎉We’re delighted to announce Arthur Grimes (Motu Senior Fellow) has been awarded a prestigious Marsden Fund grant, meaning more groundbreaking research to shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s future.🎉 (See link in the comments section on this post for more info on 2024 Marsden Fund grants). 🍃💙Arthur joins a transformative project titled "Sustainable wellbeing, institutions, and our changing relationship with Papatūānuku."  This project, led by Motu Affiliate Professor Les Oxley (University of Waikato) and including Motu Trustee Professor Sandy Morrison, fuses te ao Māori perspectives with economic analysis to model a wellbeing-driven economy for Aotearoa. One aspect of the research, which Arthur will examine, is how best to deal with the trade-offs of outcomes across time. This aspect of the research will build on advice Arthur gave to The Treasury - New Zealand in their recent review and update of the discount rate, which The Treasury uses in evaluating non-commercial public sector projects. 🎉We’re thrilled to announce that two of our talented researchers have been awarded prestigious Marsden Fund grants, paving the way for groundbreaking research to shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s future.🎉 (See link in comments section on this post for more info on 2024 Marsden Fund grants). 🧠 One is Tadhg Ryan-Charleton (Motu Fellow) who, as Principal Investigator, leads a Marsden Fund project to create a pioneering dataset on inter-firm alliances, particularly alliances between Māori-led and non-Māori firms. Collaborating with Associate Investigator Nuno Oliveira (Tilburg University) and supported by Professor Prof Jarrod Haar, PhD, FRSNZ, CFHRNZ (Massey University), Tadhg’s research will generate new insights about how firms balance multiple outcomes in alliances — like financial and environmental goals. The project expands Tadhg’s prior research on inter-firm alliances and the interplay of competition and cooperation among firms.
