About us

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is New Zealand's urban and rural firefighting organisation. For more than 150 years, fire service organisations have been at the heart of New Zealand communities. For generations we’ve been dedicated to protecting New Zealand from fire and its consequences. These days, our firefighters do so much more than just fighting fires. They work with communities to build their resilience by helping them prepare for, respond to and recover well from emergencies. We respond to a wide variety of emergencies including motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, dealing with hazardous substances, severe weather events and natural disasters. We work to reduce risk to make our communities safer, through fire safety campaigns, research, and by providing advice on the building code. In July 2017, Fire and Emergency New Zealand was established under legislation to bring together over 40 firefighting organisations around the country and around 14,000 people. Part of the new organisation was investing to make sure our firefighters across the country have the right resources to do the job.

Te Waikoropupū Springs in Tākaka are a sacred taonga for Manawhenua Ki Mohua (Golden Bay). The springs and the surrounding bush area have been registered as a wāhi tapu (sacred) site with Heritage New Zealand. At the end of August, our people, along with Mana Whenua, Department of Conservation (DOC) and Department of Corrections NZ replaced highly flammable plants near the springs with 500 low flammability natives. This was because fire behaviour models predict an uncontrolled fire in the area would cause catastrophic damage. Low flammability planting, education and early detection of fire will give our volunteer crews a much better chance of successfully responding to any fire. To everyone that was involved in this mahi, ka mau te wehi! (Awesome!) 👏 Want to learn more about low flammability planting? Auee te mamae ee. It is with deep sorrow and respect that our Board Chair Rebecca Keoghan MNZM and I, on behalf of Fire and Emergency New Zealand, acknowledge and mourn the death of Kiingi Tuuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, Maaori King. We remember and honour Kiingi Tuuheitia as a strong advocate of kotahitanga (unity) and of growing and working together for the benefit of us all. As a mark of our mourning and respect, earlier today our flags were flown at half-mast on fire stations across the motu. Nooreira e te kiingi o te kotahitanga, haere ki a raatou maa. Moe mai raa.

We’re excited to welcome the members of our new Local Advisory Committees in Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Nelson-Tasman and Southland. The committees will bring a strong community voice to our work so that we can better support communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover well from emergencies when they happen. All LAC members are well respected and connected within their communities. They represent a diverse range of interests and offer strong local knowledge and we look forward to working with them and the value they will bring. Did you know that firefighters must complete their drivers qualification before they can get behind the wheel? It's not as easy as riding a bike and it's not like driving a car. Our drivers are responsible for getting our crews and trucks safely to an incident, navigating tight streets, heavy traffic and reaching hard to access sites 🚒💨

United Fire Brigades Association Drivers Challenge Last week, I attended the UFBA Drivers Challenge in Fielding. The Drivers Challenge is a fantastic annual event at which drivers compete in practical and theory challenges to test their skills behind the wheel. I was lucky enough to have a go at one of the challenges, driving a truck around the circuit. It was great to get behind the wheel and be reminded of the significant responsibility our drivers at Fire and Emergency are given when responding to emergency events! The United Fire Brigades' Association have a range of challenges open to volunteers throughout the calendar year, including the Waterway, Road Crash Rescue and Firefighter Challenges which promote teamwork and friendly competition between brigades. They are an excellent way to hone individual skills and showcase a brigade’s expertise on a national level. Congratulations to the UFBA on an excellent event and to all the competitors taking part.

Today we are sending a six-person specialist team to the United States to help fight the wildfires burning in the Pacific Northwest. Our people will be leading groups of firefighters or helicopter operators while there. They will support the management capacity of the United States wildfire services, while also bringing back valuable experience to Aotearoa New Zealand ahead of our own wildfire season 🔥

Two Scion staff and dedicated members of the Canterbury High Country Fire Team have been honoured by Fire and Emergency NZ.   Scientist Richard Parker and Senior Technician Jamie Kunzli were recognised at a special Honours Night receiving service clasps for more than 10 years’ of service – Richard has been a volunteer firefighter in the team for nearly 13 years and Jamie, a newly appointed Station Officer, has clocked up nearly 11 years.   Jamie also received the prestigious Cyclone Gabrielle recognition pin recognising his critical role during the response to Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023. Jamie was deployed to Hawkes Bay and, as an Air Tasking Coordinator and Air Base Supervisor, Jamie led aircraft operations, collaborating with the NZ Defence Force and other agencies. The service was a true testament to Jamie's leadership and dedication.   Please join us in congratulating Jamie and Richard whose contributions outside of their core roles at Scion make us all proud! Thank you for stepping up when it matters most. Your mahi inspires us all, reminding us of the impact we can all make, whether in the midst of a crisis or through daily acts of service. Ka rawe!
