Hannah Pearson-Coats recently posted posted an article which sparked some very exciting conversations! (link in comments) The core question was – do business analysts need to have domain knowledge / subject matter expertise to do a given job? My answer was – it depends, and I came up with the picture below to explain why: (acknowledgement here to my superb past colleagues at Equinox IT for informing my thinking!) ^note this diagram excludes some elements considered for supply of ‘goods’   If the role needs domain knowledge (i.e. broad knowledge across a business activity, generally industry specific (e.g. health, banking) and/or activity specific (e.g. finance, contact centres) – a good business analyst should be able to build this fast, using their BA skillset. Possibly resources have even already been created by another BA working for the organisation!   If the role needs subject matter expertise (i.e. deep knowledge in a specific area; business knowledge (e.g. legislative compliance for payroll) and/or technical knowledge (e.g. Salesforce CRM implementation patterns, SQL and Power BI)) this takes much longer to develop, and the business may prefer an analyst with pre-existing expertise. This also minimises the risk that the analyst may not be able to upskill within the required timeframe.   In any case – there is always the option to take an analyst with a good skill set and develop their domain knowledge and/or subject matter expertise, there just needs to be enough return on investment for the employer. In a situation in which the employer is looking at two equivalent candidates, one with pre-existing knowledge and/or expertise, one without – I reckon makes sense to take the candidate who brings more to the table!   The harder call is between one with less expertise and great BA skills vs one that knows a lot of detail .... but may or may not have the BA skills you need.
