We are thrilled to share our Impact Report 2024. It brings together the collective impact of our 22 Member Hubs, showcasing the achievements of passionate professionals doing amazing mahi in their communities. Environment Hubs provide positive solutions to gritty global issues and address local challenges like they’re opportunities. They give hope, they connect, provide purpose and unite communities around what’s important. This report shows the breadth of impact of these undersung community heroes and is a road map for what can be achieved when good people receive a small amount of support. The taste of success in Every Bite. I've been so pleased to hear about the success of Every Bite, a collaborative initiative by Environment Hubs Aotearoa and Zero Waste Network Aotearoa in partnership with the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao. This innovative food waste prevention program empowers individuals to make impactful changes at home, reducing food waste through practical solutions. Since its launch in November last year, over 150 participants have completed the pilot program, contributing valuable insights and experiences. A big thank you is owed to our member partners including Environment Network Manawatū, Go Eco (Waikato Environment Centre), Sustainable HB - Centre for Climate and Resilience and Wastebusters, whose commitment has been instrumental in capturing valuable learnings, and shaping the program's success. Program launch events like this one at Sustainable HB - Centre for Climate and Resilience were a warm welcome, and provided inspiration and ideas to help participants get started. They were noted to be the most helpful in raising awareness of the food waste problem. Once everyone was back home, regular text, email and social media reminders helped participants maintain the momentum. Love this simple tech comms solution to support a program! Looking ahead, we're excited to announce that the second year of Every Bite kicks off in October 2024. Whether you're an individual eager to join the movement or an organization interested in bringing this program to your community, we invite you to get involved. As project manager Rachel Glasier aptly puts it, "It's inspiring to witness the transformative impact of increased awareness." In the for-purpose space we need to be creative, forward thinking, and astute with how we manage our income and expenditure. So, we’ve looked to leverage the power of our networks to realise procurement cost savings for our sector. I lead the community enterprise buyer group. Our members include the Community Energy Network, Environment Hubs Aotearoa, Para Kore, and the Zero Waste Network Aotearoa. We support our for-purpose community members through exclusive member discounts on specific products and services. We do this by understanding the procurement needs of our members, identifying beneficial good and services providers for the buyer group, negotiating pricing and rebate structures on behalf of our members, and keeping our network up to date on the benefits of our collective approach. I’m proud of the growth we’ve achieved, working with our partners Rothbury Insurance Brokers, PB Tech and KORA Fuel Cards, saving costs and increasing benefits together. Last Friday our EO, Georgina Morrison, delivered our oral submission on the Fast-Track Approval Bill. Quoting lessons from the Lorax, and helping one of the members of the Environment Select Committee remember their maiden speech, Georgina made a case for the importance of responsible stewardship and listening to our communities for advice and feedback. A progressive mindset is key to find solutions that balance economic development with environmental conservation and social equity. We spent the past three days in Hawke's Bay at our North Island Hui 2024, connecting and sharing inspiring kōrero with our 16 hub members' teams and an awesome speaker line-up. "What will 2050 look like?" was the hui's theme, a backdrop to think about ways to achieve a long-term shared vision for community and environment wellbeing. On Monday night, we had our opening dinner and panel at the stunning National Aquarium of New Zealand, with a inspiring welcome from Napier's Mayor Kirsten Wise, and Hawke's Bay Regional Councillor Sophie Siers. After dinner, our four panelists - Jo Wrigley (Go Eco (Waikato Environment Centre)), Carla Gee (EcoMatters Environment Trust), Sterling Ruwhiu (Beautification Trust), and our Executive Officer, Georgina Morrison - shared their unique, complementary perspectives for 2050, and attendees were invited to add their thoughts to our 2050 collective vision board. The following two days' sessions focused on providing tools to deliver positive impact. Dr. George Laking and John Bell shared important findings of their Community Resilience Research; Tom Kay, from Forest & Bird, made a case for nature-based solutions to climate change talking about the Room for Rivers case; Katie Patrick walked us through some fun and effective tools for behaviour change; Marilyn Scott, from Sustainable Hawke's Bay, shone a light on allyship and being good tangata tiriri; James Newth talked about impact investment; and Monique Kelly and Aaron Thule, from Wao, introduced us to the Wao systems shift mahi and showcased an example of network building project. Our final session was a workshop focused on mental health and wellbeing by Dr Richard Drexel. A huge thank you to the Sustainable HB - Centre for Climate and Resilience team for being absolutely amazing hosts and doing an awesome job co-organising this hui with our team. Trains are some of the best transport options for people and the environment. They are energy efficient, low emission, and optimal for freight and people transport, but despite that they are often underfunded. Our Community Resilience Research is well underway and getting some significant feedback from the communities affected by Cyclone Gabrielle and the early 2023 Auckland Floods. As this article about our research on RNZ today reports, we've noticed a really strong need for communities to have their voices heard. "People are still obviously really keen to get their stories out there, and for people to listen", commented our Data Curator and Research Lead, Jennifer Pannell. We are still welcoming feedback through our survey from people involved the community response in Hawke's Bay, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, and Tairāwhiti Gisborne, in particular.
