Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand

Recently, three members of the Philanthropy New Zealand team attended the Empowering Communities conference in Christchurch, organised by Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand. Gin, PNZ’s Head of Events and Member Engagement, shared her reflections on the event: “The conference demonstrated the passion, expertise, and warmth that define the philanthropic sector. Eleanor Cater, Arron Perriam, and the CFANZ team created an environment where attendees felt comfortable to challenge ideas, reflect deeply, and engage both operationally and emotionally.” From Philanthropy New Zealand’s perspective, the conference provided valuable insights into how community foundations operate in New Zealand. These insights will help inform PNZ’s strategy moving forward. Shifting Power and Embracing Community Agency: A Step Forward in Philanthropy At the recent Empowering Communities - Te whakamana i ngā hapori conference in Ōtautahi Christchurch, hosted by Community Foundations of Aotearoa NZ, a bold narrative emerged: a future where community agency and the indigenisation of philanthropy are central. International voices like Barry Knight (The Global Fund for Community Foundations) and Ian Bird (Community Foundations Australia) reminded us that traditional, Western-centric notions of “impact” fall short in capturing the vibrancy and energy of true community empowerment. The call to action? Shift from social banking to social change, let local communities lead, and embed the Sustainable Development Goals into our strategies. As Dr. Hana O’Regan poignantly shared, colonisation’s long tail still disempowers indigenous people. To shift that, community foundations must be agents of togetherness and justice. Are we prepared to challenge the status quo and build a philanthropic future rooted in equity and collective empowerment? We think it is super interesting to see the landscape of philanthropy shifting and changing as younger generations assert their influence. This is a terrific article from Philanthropy Australia highlighting some of these shifts: "For these younger generations, involvement in charitable activities is primarily driven by family influence, a deep passion for specific causes and a desire to support their local communities.
