Auckland on track to a better future

About us

The City Rail Link is the largest infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand. The CRL is a 3.45km twin-tunnel underground rail link up to 42 metres below the city centre transforming the downtown Britomart Transport Centre into a two-way through-station that better connects the Auckland rail network. Auckland’s annual population growth demands the completion of this complex project within tight timeframes. The CRL team are consistently challenged with tunnelling through an established city; construction on reclaimed land; the gradient of the tunnel; and the proximity of our central Britomart station to the harbour. We are proud to say we have a Safety and Sustainability lens on all of our construction work and have embraced Maori design throughout our station design. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ_sVPhrB7o

Update from work around our new Karanga-a-Hape Station. With our works concluded on the western side of Pitt Street, part of our focus will require our works to take place on the eastern side over the coming months. From 5am, Monday 9 September, we will switch our area of works on Pitt Street from the western side to the eastern side of the road. This will require a temporary overnight closure from 10pm, Sunday 8 September for the required works to take place with minimal disruption to traffic. These works are required so we can carry out essential ducting and trenching works, which are expected to take 10 to 12 weeks to complete. You can find a range of information about the traffic switch and upcoming works, including notifications, diversion routes and a list of frequently asked questions, by visiting the Karanga-a-Hape Station notification page on our website. https://lnkd.in/geY8r276

We're creating rockstars for one of our new CRL stations. After tunnelling 3.4km through volcanic rock our team know the value of a good chunk of basalt. Which is why we’ve carefully stored and are now bringing back these big boulders for landscaping use on site. Pavers, aggregate, curbing for Maungawhau Station, located at the foot of Maungawhau’s volcanic lava flow. It makes perfect sense to reuse the material that originates in abundance across this location. And one such example- the return of the rockstar boulders for the landscaping elements across the new station plaza. These rockstar boulders have survived excavation and the intense scrutiny of our design team. Their reward? To receive their own unique “number” and a position alongside the Pohutukawa that will greet passengers as the enter and exit the station. While there’s still a lot of work to go, it’s heartening to see these finishing touch elements arrive back on site ready for installation in the coming weeks.  #rail #railwaystation #boulders #tunnels #streetscapes #auckland

Our new Maungawhau Station is ringed by bridges -overlooking the CRL tracks emerging from the tunnels, spanning the existing western line, or connecting the station with Eden Terrace’s roading network. Each bridge acts as a threshold to Maungawhau Station and plays a part in telling the creation story that is woven into the overarching station design. Working with mana whenua artists Tessa Harris (Ngāi Tai Ki Tāmaki) and Graham Tipene (Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Haua, Ngāti Manu) the functional bridge structures have each been wrapped in artwork that represent Mataaoho, atua (deity) of the basalt volcanic field in Tāmaki Makaurau. These elements make the bridge network part of the ‘whānau’ of Maungawhau Station and whakapapa back to the parent narrative of Mataaoho and Mataaoho‘s specific relationship to Maungawhau which overlooks the station. #railwaystation #auckland #maoriart #maoriartist

I saw the sign! The Link Alliance team at midtown’s Te Waihorotiu Station has had an ace day, installing the first of several large station name signs. This one, located at the corner of Albert and Victoria Streets, hangs on the glass box entrance that will take passengers down to the station via a lift and double escalators. Once the station opens, the sign will be ‘lit up’ and its brown protective wrap removed. #rail #railway #auckland #railwaystation #sign

The lights are on! It's full power ahead for the CRL stations. They’re all now running on permanent power sources – both during the remainder of construction, and to power up all of the stations’ needs once complete for everything from lights to clocks and escalators. The power-on sequence involved multiple carefully-managed stages from Te Waihorotiu to Maungawhau Station and back, and we think it’s fitting that the last high-voltage energisation happened at Te Waihorotiu, where the process started with a demarcation room back in December 2023. As well as the numerous rooms and areas that have been progressively energised with either high or low voltage power after testing and commissioning, more than 7 kilometres of 22 kilovolt cables were installed across the stations and inside the tunnels to complete this work. This is a big milestone for the CRL. It's taken thousands of working hours to pull cables, and install, test and commission everything to ensure it's working. Big thank you to the whole team involved – including Link Alliance contractors, Ventia and Electrix We will keep you updated on the next big energisation coming up – for traction power to move trains inside the tunnels. #rail #railway #railwaystation #infrastructure #construction #engineering #auckland #tunnels #tunnel #tunneling #tunnelling #electricity #power #constructionworkers

We’re getting ready for the first train to be driven into the tunnels, but there’s work to do first. Auckland One Rail test train officers are presently getting hands-on experience learning how to navigate those tunnels by using a simulator that replicates the real-life version. This learning is happening at the same time as on-site familiarisation and classroom learning.    The simulator allows test train officers to practise the new routes on Auckland’s rail network before they drive the first real test trains later this year.    Like everything else on the project, ensuring that the CRL routes were added correctly into the Lander Simulation & Training Solutions simulator was tested and commissioned by many to make sure it was right. It’s another great example of the project being delivered by Link Alliance Auckland One Rail, Auckland Transport and KiwiRail working as one team.  #rail #railway #training #trains #engineering #tunnels

We are extremely proud to have won an Innovation in Air Quality Award at the CASANZ (Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand) awards this week! Construction partner, Link Alliance was recognised for its development of a Dust Risk Prediction tool (DRiPT) which helps keep air clean and safe across construction sites. Looking after the taiao (natural environment) is a key objective for the CRL project and the team’s hard work to design and then implement DRiPT is just one example of this. The tool was put in place across sites back in 2021 and has been incredibly successful since. DRiPT manages construction dust by combining short-term weather forecasting and dust management expertise to predict periods of high dust risk and provide automated recommendations for dust control measures. It is an example of a simple but effective tool – it has simplified the process for construction teams managing dust emissions on their sites, because rather than using manual site-by-site assessments the DRiPT automatically alerts site managers of potential dust issues and possible solutions. This means DRiPT can reduce turnaround times to implement appropriate dust mitigation measures before construction activities take place. DRiPT has reduced the chance that high dust risk events could be missed when planning construction activities and provides timely advice for dust mitigation. It has also allowed construction teams to stay ahead of the risk from dust issues, and makes tracking and communication more efficient. Thank you very much to our team for all their continued hard work to honour sustainability throughout construction, and to CASANZ for acknowledging them. #CASANZ #Cleanair #Taiao #Sustainability #Innovation #dustmanagement #construction

The fit-out inside the new midtown Auckland Te Waihorotiu Station is going well. The Link Alliance team is working hard with the fit-out inside the Victoria Street entrance structure west of Albert Street near Federal Street. This includes the feature ceiling, lift and escalators down into the station, and ticketing areas.    Can you also see the top of the double escalators? They will eventually take passengers down to the station concourse level as shown in the digital render. #rail #railway #railwaystation #auckland #construction #design #infrastructure
