See all 37 new emojis, including beans, pregnant men, trolls, melting face

Lil Nas X will soon have more options for promoting the birth of his new albums

Governing emojis body The Unicode Consortium has announced its finalized list of new emojis, set to hit devices “sometime next year.”

The 838 new characters in Unicode 14.0 offer 75 more skin tone options and 37 new emoji characters — including pregnant men, potentially useful to “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” singer Nas — plus more obscure options for writing the northeastern Indian language Toto, a Kyrgyz Republic currency sign and undeciphered historical script primarily used on the island of Cyprus.

Highlights of the new emojis include an exciting variety of contemporary facial expressions including “face with open eyes and hand over mouth,” “dotted line face,” “saluting face,” “face holding back tears” and “melting face.”

The head is not the only body part with a fresh array of graphic representations: There will also soon be multiple more hand options, including two hands making a heart together, “hand with index finger and thumb crossed” (reportedly quite significant for the K-pop community) and “index pointing at the viewer.”

For nature lovers, there’s coral, lotus, empty nest, nest with eggs and beans. Disco fans will no doubt get much use from the mirror ball, while there’s a ring buoy for all those emoji-using lifeguards out there, a low battery for the techies, a playground slide for kids — and bubbles for all.

Emojis of a Shrek-like troll, pregnant man and hamsa — a symbol of protection in the Middle East — are also in the update.

Emoji developers said the novel images will bring users more than just an innovative assortment of icons to send friends.

“It is not just about adding new emoji or changing new emoji,” Unicode emoji-development subcommittee chair Jennifer Daniel told The Wall Street Journal. “It is about the whole experience.”
