Bio

Selina Heppell is the Department Head and Professor of marine fisheries ecology at Oregon State University. In her research, Selina primarily uses computer models and simulations to help us understand how populations respond to human activities and environmental change, guiding research and management policy towards their recovery. Selina is particularly interested in finding ways to protect marine species and habitats while supporting local fisheries. Her work with biologists and management agencies takes her all over the globe, and she has taught population dynamics courses in Iceland, Mexico, Slovenia, Croatia, and Colombia. Recently, Selina was Chair of the Ecosystem Management Subcommittee for the Science and Statistical Committee of the Pacific Fishery Management Council and regularly serves on advisory teams for marine conservation projects, including a National Research Council review of sea turtle assessment methods, the Lenfest Forage Fish Task Force, and the Ecosystem Management Working Group for NOAA’s Science Advisory Board. In all her work, Selina strives to bridge quantitative ecology and practical solutions to coastal resource issues.
