A number of studies have found that robots can contribute to engagement and motivation in educati... more A number of studies have found that robots can contribute to engagement and motivation in educational settings. We wanted to explore the possibilities and challenges of using a social robot as an assistive tool for learning and training of basic concepts and words. Robots are considered promising tools in language training because they can contribute to systematic interaction and repetition. A prototype was developed using an Aldebaran NAO robot combined with pictures that could be presented on a tablet, PC or on the wall using a projector. The prototype was piloted in two pre-projects with different groups of children learning Norwegian. One project targeted second language learners in a kindergarten and the other targeted young primary school pupils with autism spectrum disorder. Both of these groups need more systematic training than they usually get during the normal kindergarten and school schedule. We wanted to study whether and how the use of a social robot could contribute to more systematic training, increased learning intensity, more repetitions and ultimately more effective language learning. In this paper we present experiences from developing, implementing and using the prototype in the two different settings. The prototype is described, as well as the pedagogical settings of the two pilots. We present results from observations of the children and interviews with teachers and supporting personnel. We discuss differences between the two cases and methodological limitations. Finally, we discuss possibilities and challenges of using robots in language learning and training of children.

The accepted papers covered topics such as accessibility by design, digital inclusion, accessibility devices and applications.We believe that the SMART ACCESIBILITY 2017 contributions offered a large panel of solutions to key problems in areas of accessibility. There is a large interest in user experience today, both from a usability and accessibility point... more There is a large interest in user experience today, both from a usability and accessibility point of view. However, in order to verify what the users actually like and don't like, user testing must be conducted. Traditionally, user experience is measured retrospective with surveys and interviews, but this is not the most optimal approach since it does not measure user experience in the moment and it is prone for human error because of our inaccurate memory recollection. Here we propose a method that does semi-automated evaluation of user experience by utilizing electrophysiological equipment that monitors electrical activity of the brain. We describe an approach that together with brain activity monitoring will collect and quantify user experience in a non-intrusive manner. We demonstrate the method by showing how a low cost device can record brain activity during a user test, and auto-detect where the user has difficulties understand or navigating a solution. All this is done in an unsupervised manner, but an observer must still verify the feedback with the actual user to remove false positives. Our method is not limited to digital solutions and can also be used for evaluating user experience of physical installations.

De har også lykkes i å implementere modellen som en egen enhet for Rehabilitering, læring og friskliv i den nye storkommunen Indre Østfold. Rammeverk for «Community Based Rehabilitation -CBR” utviklet av WHO har inspirert utviklingen av rehabiliteringstjenestene i Indre Østfold. Modellen omfatter tverrfaglig rehabiliteringsteam, bruk av teknologi, dagtilbud, involvering av lokalsamfunnet, mestrings- og læringstilbud og sengeplasser for intensiv rehabilitering. Prosjektet har vist at det er mulig å koordinere komplekse rehabiliteringsaktiviteter i kommunal setting. Rehabiliteringsprosjektet erfarer at koordineringsarbeidet gir gevinster i form av tidlig igangsetting, mindre avbrudd og derved mer intensitet i rehabiliteringsforløpet. There are many methods for testing accessibility and universal design, ranging from checklists an... more There are many methods for testing accessibility and universal design, ranging from checklists and guidelines to automated testing and finally to human testing with participants from different user groups. It is, however, not straight forward to determine how a testing method relates to impairments and barriers. In this work we have expanded the W3C cognitive barriers from one category to four categories in order to provide a better overview of cognitive barriers and testing methods. We also present an overview of multiple existing accessibility testing methods and what kind of barriers they cover. Finally, we present a recommendation on how to select a collection of accessibility testing methods in order to cover the broadest range of disabilities. Our focus is tools that can empower and ease work processes of software development teams, including both developers and testers.

Today, citizens can access subsets of their health information through dedicated, secure portals, manually enter information into specific apps of their choice or keep paper logs. The result is a mix of paper documents and digital snippets of exchanges and data in incompatible formats. This may be supplemented with ad-hoc strategies for interpretation and management. There is currently no simple way to collect, complement and control health information from multiple sources, institutions, services and systems, and thus no way to get a good overview and understanding of its implications. Today, most software projects utilize an automated build process with unit tests, code quality ch... more Today, most software projects utilize an automated build process with unit tests, code quality checks, end-to-end integration tests, and more. To make software usable by as many people as possible, regardless of capabilities, accessibility testing must be integrated into the build process. The goal is highly accessible software where issues are found early in the development lifecycle. In this work, we have investigated the most common accessibility testing tools suitable for integration in an automated build process and split the tools into two categories based on their rulesets. The rulesets are evaluated against a well known demonstration site for calculation of the rulesets' precision, recall, and $F_1$ scores. Finally, we discuss the implications of their scores and how accessibility testing tools can be integrated into an automated build process

We provide a detailed background, specify relevant research areas, and review research in these areas. We discuss the findings and put them into perspective with regard to universal design and accessibility in smart environments, and point out research shortcomings concerning ambient intelligence and hybrid interactions. Our findings show that the majority of related work needs stronger emphasis on aspects related to universal design in general; universal design in ambient intelligence; universal design in multimodal interactions; and universal design in security, privacy, and other ethical aspects of smart environments. By means of an online survey among impaired users of the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration’s online services, it is analyzed which challenges these users experience with public services and feedback processes as of today, and how both can be designed for better and more inclusive online services.
