Did you know?   Vertical farming significantly expands the available crop growing area; useful for smallholders, urban rooftop, and tunnel farming.   For instance, a vertical structure with a height of 1.2 meters and a circumference of 1.5 meters (diameter approximately 0.5 meters) increases the farming area by 9 times compared to the land space it occupies. This allows the investment to be recovered within one growing season. Introduction of Mushroom Cultivation In Humla “Jaskala and her community received training, seeds, and materials for commercial mushroom farming. ANSAB introduced an innovative method, replacing rice straw with locally available resources like barley, millet, and buckwheat straw. This made mushroom farming more affordable and sustainable, allowing marginalized communities to optimize local resources. The main role of this position is to support the planning and implementation of the GESI strategy in ANSAB. Nepal's alpine Himalayan forests and rangelands are exceptional global biodiversity hotspots, home to keystone species including the FairWild certified #Jatamansi and #Kutki. We're thrilled to partner again with TRAFFIC and others to promote sustainable harvesting of valuable plants in this region. Local livelihoods and biodiversity face threats from overharvesting of wild plants and fungi, climate change, illegal trade, and unfair supply chains. However, there are significant opportunities to enhance both sustainability and trade of wild-harvested forest products. We aim to scale up successful pilots in Nepal, connecting to major markets in India, China, and Europe. Our key goals: 🌱 Sustainably manage over 100,000 hectares of high-altitude Himalaya through participatory land and species management and monitoring approaches. 🌱 Increase the volume of internationally traded sustainable Himalayan wild NTFP products (flora and fungi) that comply with CITES requirements and the FairWild Standard. 🌱 Benefit 20,000 harvesters through training, with 10,000 (at least 40% women) improving their income and food security through sustainable trade in wild plant and fungi ingredients. Launched on August 7, 2024, in Kathmandu, this project has the full backing of Nepal’s Ministry of Forests and Environment and is funded by the UK Government through the Biodiversity Challenge Funds.
