Appalachia
Appalachia er en region og et kulturområde i det østlige USA som strekker seg fra den sørlige delen av delstaten New York til det nordlige Alabama, Mississippi og Georgia. Appalachene selv, fjellkjeden som regionen er oppkalt etter, strekker seg fra Newfoundland i Canada til Cheaha Mountain i Alabama, men Appalachia – kulturregionen – er i og tildels i flatlandet nordvest for den sentrale og sørlige delen av den langstrakte fjellkjeden. Det bor rundt 23 millioner mennesker der.
Appalachia ble anerkjent som en egen region på slutten av 1800-tallet. Siden den gang har det oppstått flere myter og forvrengninger om Appalachia og dens innbyggere. Sensasjonalistisk journalistikk på begynnelsen av 1900-tallet fokuserte hovedsakelig på slående og eksepsjonelle regionale fenomener som heimebrent og familiefeider. I populære medier blir innbyggerne i Appalachia ofte stereotypert som dårlig utdannede og impulsivt voldelige. Regionen slet med fattigdom og økonomisk deprivasjon i lang tid.
