Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

[rediger | rediger kilde]

Skipsforlis i 1743

[rediger | rediger kilde]

«The Isles of Scilly have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) since 1975 which has been rebranded as the Isles of Scilly National Landscape. The smallest AONB designation in the UK, our AONB designation is unusual in that it covers the entire archipelago, including the uninhabited Islands and rocks, with some Islands being designated “scheduled landscapes” as a result of their rich, visible histories. [---] The arrival in April of breeding puffins off Annet and the Western Rocks is also another major draw to Scilly, and an amazing sight to behold. They stay on the islands until mid-July. And not forgetting of course, the Manx shearwaters, which have made a magnificent return to the islands following the much heralded success of the internationally-acclaimed ‘Isles of Scilly Seabird Recovery Project’.»

Besøkt 3. november 2024. «On 13 July 1743, the Hollandia ran aground on Gunner Rock, at the southwest side of the Isles of Scilly near Annet Island. She was sailing too close to shore, possibly due to foggy weather and poor visibility, and instead of sailing south towards the English Channel, she sailed north, putting her on a collision course with the Isles of Scilly. With the bottom of the ship stuck on Gunner Rock, the crew attempted to alert those on shore to the emergency through a salute of cannon fire, but the Hollandia was too far out to sea for a rescue operation, and all those on board perished.»
