🚢 Did you know that in shipping, location is everything? The Panama Canal plays a crucial role in global shipping, enabling shorter voyages, lower fuel consumption, and faster product delivery. When ships can't use the canal, they face a two-week detour, increasing fuel consumption and emissions, effecting both shipping companies and the environment.   🌧️ In 2023, a severe drought cut canal traffic from 13,000 to 10,000 vessels, impacting many companies, including ours. Low water levels meant the number of ships passing through had to be cut from 35 to 22 per day.    💼 Rita Dovran, Senior Manager for Global Tonnage Allocation, notes that while 2024 brought more rain, uncertainties remain. Wallenius Wilhelmsen continues to optimize fleet deployment, using our 125-vessel fleet to minimize cargo flow disruptions.   Read here why the Panama Canal remains a critical artery in global shipping.  https://lnkd.in/dw_qc7BE

🌟 Meet our Sustainability summer intern, Philippe Pignatel Jenssen, at our Oslo office!🌟 When Philippe joined us, he had some preconceived notions about the shipping industry’s approach to sustainability. “I initially believed many companies viewed sustainability as a compliance requirement rather than a genuine interest,” he shares. 🌱However, his time at Wallenius Wilhelmsen has shifted that perspective. “I now see a strong commitment to creating a greener future, with sustainability deeply integrated into the core strategy,” he notes. Philippe’s passion for sports, travel, and finance naturally aligns with his interest in the shipping industry. As a sports enthusiast, he values the discipline and teamwork needed to drive progress. His love for travel has deepened his appreciation for global connections, much like the essential role shipping plays in international trade. And as a finance geek, he understands the importance of making sustainable investments for the future. 🌍 “Over 80% of the world’s trade is carried by sea, making shipping a crucial part of the global economy and everyday life,” Philippe explains, seeing endless opportunities in this dynamic and impactful industry. - My belief in the need for decarbonization and a sustainable future has been reinforced by seeing how Wallenius Wilhelmsen integrates sustainability into their strategy, aiming for net-zero by 2040.

🌟 Earlier this month, we celebrated YoungShip's 20th anniversary at ShipCon, with Wallenius Wilhelmsen as a new contributor and title sponsor!   This year, the event was organized by YoungShip Oslo, bringing ShipCon to Oslo. YoungShip, a non-profit for young professionals in the maritime industry, gathers experts every year at the ShipCon conference.   At ShipCon, we shared our ambitions, contributed to key industry discussions, and forged new partnerships with our peers. Christos Chryssakis, Head of New Energy, participated in the panel on decarbonization pathways, while Lene Bårli Wiederstrøm, Senior CEO Advisor, and Christian Holth, SVP Digital Supply Chain Solutions, gave a presentation on digitalization and decarbonization. 🌱   They emphasized how digitalization and decarbonization are vital for the future of shipping and logistics. This includes reducing energy consumption and CO2e intensity, and increasing the use of low GHG fuels like biofuel and methanol, with the goal of offering a net-zero services by 2027. Lene and Christian also talked about "rewiring our core infrastructure" to build a digital-first operation and create new ecosystems that connect the industry. ⚡   By orchestrating data across the supply chain, we create more efficient logistics networks. At the same time, we’re progressing toward net-zero with biofuels and our Reduced Carbon Service, delivering significant emissions reductions for our customers. 🌿 Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eVhGYcmc https://lnkd.in/eNhd95qF

After 5 years, I am now working as Customer Coordination Team Leader (CCC). CCC in general is the engine connecting Wallenius Wilhelmsen and customers daily. In collaboration with the sales office, trade, planners, and terminals, we find solutions for all OEMs by taking the Wallenius Wilhelmsen goals into consideration. 🌟What makes me proud of working in Wallenius Wilhelmsen: At Wallenius Wilhelmsen, we have a clear strategy, and the working atmosphere is wonderful and makes me feel at home. Under very tight tonnage capacity, we manage to meet customers' expectations and sail vessels 100%. In this week's #MeetOurPeople, we'd like you to meet Cargo Superintendent at the port of Zeebrugge, Wolfgang Claeys. 🚀 What I do and why it is important: As a Cargo Superintendent, my role is to coordinate the cargo operation. I work together with different departments (terminal, quality, and vessel) to prepare the vessel before the start of the operation. A Cargo Superintendent calculates the number of stevedores required to execute the work on board and conducts pre-ops meetings before the start of each shift. I ensure that the pre-plan is implemented. Additionally, I provide supervision for health, safety, and quality on board. 🌟What makes me proud of working in Wallenius Wilhelmsen: It is a pleasure to work for the Wallenius Wilhelmsen group. We have a mix of young, talented, and very experienced people. This combination is a win-win for the company. My fondest memory is the loading of six transformers, weighing between 100.8 tonnes and 178.7 tonnes, on the M/V Traviata. Four of them went to Savannah and two to Brisbane. It is always a special moment when we need to load special cargo like a transformer, but loading six in one shift makes it even more special.
