Simple demonstration, huge impact. The bottle on the left-hand side demonstrates the importance of LOW SHEAR in process equipment. Due to lower shear forces, and therefore less droplet breakup, the left bottle contains larger oil droplets. These larger droplets separate significantly faster than those in the bottle on the right-hand side, which are small due to the higher shear forces found in standard pumps and valves. How can I make a low shear fixed speed pump setup? First of all, you need a proper Low Shear pump. Next, consider operating the pump intermittently. If this is not possible, a recycle line is often used in produced water applications to handle varying water production rates. It is highly recommended to install the recycle line downstream of the separation equipment, rather than directly downstream of the pump. This reduces the amount of oil that is recycled back upstream. Doing this also reduces the pressure drop across the recycle valve, which is a means to reduce droplet breakup. Does Low Shear pumping require variable speed / frequency drive? No, but it is highly recommended. For low shear pumping, VFD is the preferred way to handle turndowns. This is to avoid recycling oil and chemicals. Often produced water rates vary. Because of this, fixed speed pumps require minimum flow recirculation lines. These flow lines have valves that normally cause droplet breakup and thus reduce the overall beneficial effect of the low shear pump.
