State-of-the-art wind analysis and wind measurements since 1998.
Om oss
Kjeller Vindteknikk has more than 20 years of experience working with wind energy and is one of the leading consultancy companies in wind power and wind engineering in the Nordics. We are a science based consultancy that is passionate about wind, be it to power a wind turbine or the flow past a bridge and we continuously develop our knowledge and expertise by leading and participating in a number of research projects, finding new innovative solutions, with the aim of working towards a more sustainable future. We deliver demanding climate and wind analysis solutions for wind energy and other infrastructure sectors. We deliver turn-key advanced measurement system campaigns for wind energy, power lines and major bridge and other construction projects. We have currently have offices in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. We are a part of the Norconsult Group, which Norway’s largest consultancy company and one of the leading multidisciplinary consultancy firms in the Nordic region.

While the strong winds persisted also for September in the northern regions of the Nordics, KVTs Wind Index shows lower wind velocities south of Brønnøysund in Norway, Västerbotten in Sweden and Vaasa in Finland. #windenergy https://lnkd.in/dDc8Kwte

Performing wind measurements for #offshore wind farms in cold and icing climates is challenging but not impossible. We have been delivering lidar measurements for OX2 Halla offshore project in Finland now for 2 years with an impressive 98 % technical availability in severe winter conditions. The measurements are installed on Oulu 1 lighthouse which is located near the planned Halla offshore wind farm. The measurements will continue for at least one more year. #windenergy

How to predict sub-grid precipitation showers from model data? Introducing "potential precipitation"! Kristian Ingvaldsen presented the work on probabilistic forecasting of wet snow accumulation on the Queensferry Crossing bridge in Scotland on #IWAIS 2024. He talked about the difficulties of predicting snow showers from convective clouds whose horizontal extent is too small for the model to resolve them explicitly. The proposed solution was to identify the large-scale patterns that enable small-scale convection and to introduce "potential precipitation" by evaluating the Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) and other key parameters. The forecast system has already been operational for two winter seasons and has showed promising results. In the #research project “Safe Operation of Wind Power in Icing Climate”, we are developing a tool to map #wind turbine #icing risk, so that operating staff feel safer and can optimize their day to day tasks during winter. In August, we met our project partners, Statkraft, Norsk Hydro , Fred. Olsen Renewables, Zephyr and Meteorologisk institutt, for a successful meeting at Statkraft's office at Fosen in Trønderlag. Since operating staff were represented, we got a lot of insight into their experiences from operating wind farms under icing conditions. We were lucky to have a visit to Harbaksfjellet wind farm on the second day (see photo). #wind power #Icing https://lnkd.in/dnRiFhhh

Early insights into icing conditions for arctic wind energy Jonas Strand presented his work on atmospheric in-cloud icing using the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model at #IWAIS 2024. This work focuses on assessing icing conditions at a prospective site for a new wind power plant in a region prone to icing. Identifying and understanding icing-related challenges is essential for optimal operation of wind turbines in arctic environments. Given the complexities of Arctic climates, it is vital to evaluate the performance of numerical weather prediction models to predict icing. Accurate modeling helps optimize the design of wind power plants and mitigating icing-related risks. August winds were exceptionally strong across the Nordic region. Did this result in good production for your wind farm? #windenergy https://lnkd.in/dPCEs3YG

Ice modeling reduced the CO2 emissions from Railway project with more than 300 tons! During the biannual icing workshop #IWAIS our colleague Maria Enger Hoem presented an alternative method of estimating environmental loads for design of overhead contact line support system for railways. Today's practice is using regional values for national standards, while the alternative is to use modelled local meteorological data instead. This gave lower ice loads but higher wind loads than the standard values for this particular project. However, the combination load of wind and ice were lower, yielding lower design environmental loads which again led to a reduction in amount of steel for the masts - corresponding to 335 tons of CO2 emissions saved. Mapping extreme ice loads in Sweden. Sigmund Guttu presented the resulting ice load map for overhead lines in Sweden at #IWAIS 2024. We have created a map for Svenska Kraftnät showing the extreme ice loads taking into account both rime ice and wet snow. Rime ice in combination with dry snow accumulation is most frequent in north and mid Sweden, while wet snow is the predominant type in south of Sweden.
