On World Food Day 2024, the Food Trails project reached its conclusion after four years of collaboration with European cities. The initiative made significant strides in advancing sustainable, healthy and inclusive food policies. Achievements include: - 11 cities and metropolitan authorities developed municipal acts, guidelines and goals for their food policies; - 31 pilot actions were implemented, positively influencing local food systems; - 8 tools were created to support cities in developing food system interventions and measuring their outcomes and impacts To find out more about key outcomes from the project, visit our news piece: https://lnkd.in/g3ZiW6vk Thank you to all the project partners and cities that made this possible. #EUFoodCities

Om oss
EAT is an international foundation linking food, health and sustainable development across science, business and policy. Originally launched in 2013, EAT is now an independent foundation with three core partners: The Stordalen Foundation, the Stockholm Resilience Centre and the Wellcome Trust. The overall objective of EAT is to expand scientific knowledge on the interconnections between food, health and environmental sustainability, spur innovation along the food value chain, and facilitate the development of evidence-based policies to radically transform the global food system to be able to deliver healthy, affordable diets to a growing world population within the planetary boundaries. Multi-stakeholder, multidisciplinary and multi-scale collaboration between business, science, politics and civil society lies at the heart of EAT’s work. EAT believes that a transformation of the food system is only possible if these diverse actors collectively address the intertwined issues of food, health and sustainability, and develop integrated strategies on food production and consumption to leverage multiple benefits for human and planetary health.

Our co-founder Gunhild Anker Stordalen has signed an open letter to President Gustavo Petro of Colombia and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, recognizing their leadership in advancing integrated action on climate, nature, and food systems. To read the letter, please see the full post below.
An Urgent Call for United Global Action on Climate, Nature, and Food Systems🌍 At #COP16 in Colombia just now, leaders from around the world are calling for "a year of united action on climate, nature, and food." I am proud to be one of the signatories joining voices from business, finance, science, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and youth in urging President Petro of #Colombia and President Lula of #Brazil to mobilize the world toward a shared vision from Cali to Belém #COP30. With Colombia and Brazil’s leadership, we have an historic opportunity over the next 12 months to: 🌎 Strengthen national #climate and #biodiversity plans 🌿 Scale up investment for #nature and #foodsystems transformation 🗣️ Champion the inclusive participation of #IndigenousPeoples and local communities As the February 2025 deadline approaches for countries to submit updated #NDCs, we write that “we can make ‘peace with nature’ the guiding principle that shapes national climate action plans.” Too often, climate and biodiversity are addressed as separate challenges – but we have long known that we solve both, or we solve neither. This is the moment to change course and seize the chance to act boldly. Read the letter here: https://lnkd.in/dTeaEDtV and join us in supporting this call to action. #ProtectWhatWeLove #WithNature

Lidl has taken a bold step in its sustainability strategy by tripling its range of plant-based products in the UK, according to The Grocer. The retail giant is also setting new sales targets aimed at supporting climate goals. Lidl aims for plant-based items to account for 25% of its total protein sales by 2030, a significant jump from its 14% baseline in 2021. This goal aligns with the #EATLancet Commission's recommendation to reduce consumption of red meat and sugar by 50% by 2050. Lidl GB's Chief Commercial Officer, Richard Bourns, emphasized that the company’s commitment to sustainable proteins would play a crucial role in reducing its Scope 3 CO2 emissions. Earlier this year, Lidl also strengthened its sustainability efforts by announcing a 5-year partnership with WWF, aiming to provide households with more sustainable choices and ensure that business models work within planetary boundaries. A great article in #NatureFood by Agnes Kalibata and David Nabarro underscores that well-structured dialogues are key to driving real change in global food systems. The 2021 UN Food Systems Summit hosted over 1,600 Food Systems Dialogues, shaping strategies and priorities for national food systems transformation. EAT, alongside WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) helped launch the Food System Dialogues under David Nabarro’s leadership. As we the approach the release of #EATLancet 2.0, we will continue to build on this experience and expand our conversation with all stakeholders to craft actionable solutions for a healthier planet and people. Read via the link below.
⭐ Food systems transformation through dialogues ⭐ 4SD Foundation was asked by AGNES KALIBATA, Special Envoy for the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit, to design a methodology for large scale dialogues, manage the Summit Dialogues website (www.summitdialogues.org) and accompany dialogue convenors. We are proud to have been asked. By the time of the Summit, National Convenors were nominated in over 140 countries, nearly 1700 dialogue events had taken place involving over 110 000 participants, and there were 120 strategic pathways for national food systems transformation. This was extraordinary popular engagement in a global process 👏 Agnes and I have written a short comment for #NatureFood, titled "Food systems transformation through dialogues". 💻https://rdcu.be/dXF4U We reflect on the experiences of the Food Systems Summit Dialogues between 2020 and 2022. We also reflect on how dialogues, by engaging multiple actors and enabling them to align on desired systems shifts, can increase the momentum needed for systems to shift in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. #UNFSS #UNFSS2021 #FoodSystems #FutureofFood #2030Agenda #CFS52 #NatureFood #SummitDialogues #FoodSystemsDialogues #NutritionDialogues Dr. Martin Frick Lawrence Haddad CMG Stefanos Fotiou Gunhild Anker Stordalen Diane Holdorf Paul Newnham Afshan Khan Ertharin Cousin Florence LASBENNES John Atkinson Charlotte Dufour Thuy (Twee) Maryen Marlen Schuepbach Arne O'Donoghue Gianluca Allaria Professor Lindiwe Majele Sibanda Ajay Vir Jakhar AGRA EAT Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development World Economic Forum Gabriela Burian (she/her) Dr Dhanush Dinesh Tom Arnold Luisa Volpe Dan Irvine Francesco Branca Gabriel Ferrero de Loma Osorio Melissa Pinfield Ibrahim Mayaki Zak Bleicher Adam Gerstenmier Evan Fraser Anna Taylor Morgan Gillespy Christine Campeau

Exciting! Healthcare professionals are advocating for healthier, plant-rich meals in hospitals – a win for patients' health and the planet! 🌿 ❤️ 🌍 Over 20 organizations in the UK, including the British Society for Hematology, Faculty of Public Health, and Doctors Association UK, along with more than 1,200 healthcare professionals, have signed an open letter to NHS leaders, calling for plant-rich meals to become the default in healthcare settings. The term "plant-rich" is key as illustrated by the #EATLancet´s #PlanetaryHealthDiet – this isn’t about going vegan, but about offering healthier, plant-predominant options. Meat, eggs, and other animal products remain on the menu, but the focus shifts towards boosting nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, which can significantly improve health outcomes. Evidence continues to show that moving toward a plant-rich diet not only improves public health and reduces health inequalities but also helps us meet crucial climate and nature goals. A similar hospital initiative in New York saw a 36% drop in food carbon emissions, cost savings, and a 90% patient satisfaction rate. This call should be an inspiration for health professionals and hospitals everywhere! #FoodIsMedicine #HealthyEating # #ClimateHealth #Foodcanfixit Watch the video below, and read more: https://lnkd.in/d6afkrBr

A clarion call on the health of our planet by Johan Rockström: the Planetary Health Check reveals that six out of nine critical Earth systems have already been breached, threatening the stability of life on Earth. 🌍🚨 Climate change, biodiversity loss, and the overuse of freshwater and land systems are just some of the crises we face. One powerful solution to help reverse some of this damage? Shifting towards plant-rich food systems. While not directly mentioned in the article, transforming our diets can ease the strain on these vital systems and play a crucial role in restoring planetary health. Our window for change is small but still open. Let’s act before it’s too late. A must read: https://lnkd.in/eU_u-uGJ

How can we transform global nutrition for a healthier future? Despite strides made over the decades, #child malnutrition remains alarmingly high, and #obesity rates are climbing worldwide. The new The World Bank 2024 Investment Framework for Nutrition proposes a roadmap for change, offering evidence-based, cost-effective interventions to save millions of lives and generate economic benefits of up to $2.4 trillion. By scaling up high-impact nutrition programs, we can avert child stunting, maternal anemia, and stillbirths—while addressing both undernutrition and obesity. Achieving this will require an additional $13 billion annually over the next decade, particularly in low- and middle-income regions. But the potential return? A staggering $23 for every dollar invested, outweighing the costs of inaction. From innovative financing models like taxes on unhealthy foods to repurposing agrifood subsidies, these solutions are critical to building healthy, sustainable and equitable food systems.
