Today is the OCEANOVATION summit in the Netherlands. How can we improve our impact on the oceans and planet in the maritime and ports sector? Some of the main issues for our oceans are: -Acidification, due to too much CO2 -Warming, leading to for example coral bleaching -Sea level rise, threatening large communities close to the sea This is why it is crucial that this community comes together to share best practices, form alliances and accelerate innovate. The session on sustainability in the ports and maritime sector was chaired by Ann Lee Carpenter and joined by Joris Kil, Oliver Risse and myself. We discussed: -The speed of innovation in our sector: how can we help startups and corporates to speed up implementation? -The need for focus on scaleups: especially in this phase we need more projects, finances and corporate involvement! -The role of hydrogen, digital and electrifcation is ports: the sector is clearly moving, but learning how to pilot fast and effectively is still a challenge. SHORE POWER FOR TANKERS HAS A SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL TO REDUCE IN-PORT EMISSIONS As part of a CEF Study project co-funded by the European Union, the Port of Rotterdam, in collaboration with the municipality of Rotterdam and various partners in the port of Rotterdam, is conducting four feasibility studies for shore power. This takes place at four large terminals in the port of Rotterdam; the ECT (Amazonehaven), APMT2 (Amaliahaven), VOPAK (Vlaardingen), and the Cruise terminal (Wilhelminakade). The studies consist of different parts; detailed technical studies, environmental and social cost-benefit studies and preparing tendering and permitting procedures. Feasibility Study for Liquid Bulk is carried out in consortium between Port of Rotterdam, Vopak and Stolt Tankers. The study for Vopak Vlaardingen is carried out in a consortium with Vopak and Stolt Tankers and aims to establish a global standard for shore power for tankers. Between 2022 and 2024, Port of Rotterdam, Vopak and Stolt Tankers have conducted a preliminary technical feasibility study, a business case analysis and a preliminary environmental impact assessment. To identify the different technical solutions with regards to the ship-shore interface for shore power for tankers, and assess these solutions on their safety and operational implications, the consortium hired DNV Maritime Advisory. In June 2023, DNV completed a preliminary technical feasibility study on developing a high-voltage Onshore Power System (OPS) for tankers. The study consisted of various aspects: An in-depth investigation into current shore power solutions for tankers was carried out, addressing challenges like grid power availability, frequency, voltage level, and load requirements for different tanker types. Three OPS connection scenarios were evaluated: Scenario 1: Midship connection using the ship’s crane for the OPS cable. Scenario 2: Midship connection with a crane-based Cable Management System (CMS) on the jetty. Scenario 3: Stern connection with a crane-based CMS onshore or on a platform/monopile in the water. As part of a Safety Assessment (HAZID), scenario 3 was identified as the safest, with no high-risk hazards, compared to four and three high-risk hazards in scenarios 1 and 2, respectively. In a Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA), scenario 3 emerged as the preferred option due to superior safety, operability, technical maturity, and equipment availability. OCIMF takes standardization of shore power for tankers to the next level in the course of developing the preliminary technical feasibility study. "Hellenic News"

Arne Strybos, Program Manager - Fuel Transition at Port of Antwerp-Bruges will be speaking at the Marine Energy Transition Forum taking place in Antwerp 22-23 October 2024. Arne will speak in session five: A shore thing. METF 2024 will conclude with a focus on the increasingly pivotal role of ports in shipping’s energy transition. Shipping’s decarbonisation will not happen without the support and expertise of both the global bunker hubs, as well as so-called second tier ports. Ports will be the entry and exit points for the transport of new energies, of which shipping will be an off taker as both cargo carrier and fuel consumer. Keeping a sharp focus on the various vessel types that make up the global fleet, this session will focus on terminal and bunker supply infrastructure and the provision of shore power for vessels at berth. Pot Scheepvaart orders another 6,340 dwt MPP ship at Royal Bodewes. Dutch shipping company Pot Scheepvaart has ordered another 6,340 dwt multipurpose ship at compatriot shipyard Royal Bodewes. As informed, construction on the Ice Class 1A ship will start in 2026, with delivery expected in the second quarter of 2027. “The specifications will be the same as our 757 which is already under construction and will be launched next month,” Pot Scheepvaart said. In 2024, the shipping company ordered the first general cargo vessel designed to carry general cargoes, timber, paper, wood pulp, and bulk cargoes. In collaboration with class society RINA and Bodewes, Pot Scheepvaart recently increased the ship’s deadweight to 6,340 tons from the original 6,000. “An increase of more than 5% from the original planned 6.000 tons deadweight will result in an even more efficient design,” the Delfzijl-based shipping company explained. Royal Bodewes revealed that the first unit, which is currently being built at the yard in the Northern Netherlands, is scheduled to be launched next month. Six new energy-efficient tugboats arrive in Antwerp: A new milestone in the greening of the port. In a new milestone in the greening of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, six energy-efficient tugboats, including the groundbreaking Volta 1, have arrived in Antwerp port. The Volta 1, Europe’s first fully electric RSD tugboat, exemplifies the port’s ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.   European first: The Volta 1   The electric tugboat Volta 1 is a European first. With a bollard pull of 70 tons and powerful batteries that can fully recharge in just two hours via a 1.5 MW charging station, this tugboat is completely emission-free. In addition to the Volta 1, five diesel-powered tugboats also arrived in Antwerp. All six vessels are of the RSD (Reversed Stern Drive) type, designed with a dual-bow principle, making them exceptionally manoeuvrable and versatile for both forward and backward towing operations. Thanks to an advanced exhaust gas after-treatment system and energy-efficient design, the new vessels contribute to reducing emissions and fuel consumption.   An impressive journey from Vietnam to Antwerp   Damen Shipyards Group began construction of the tugboats in 2023, following the order from the Antwerp-Bruges Port Authority. Built at the Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, the tugboats underwent extensive commissioning, port tests and sea trials after their launch between April and August this year. In October, the vessels were loaded onto the heavy-lift ship Jumbo Kinetic, renowned for transporting exceptional cargo. After a journey of more than 10,000 km, with stopovers in Singapore and Las Palmas, the tugboats safely arrived in Antwerp late last week. In the coming months, the vessels will be prepared for full deployment in the port, including technical start-up, crew training and testing of the Volta 1 in collaboration with new charging infrastructure installed at the Nautical Operational Cluster (NOC).   Greening the port   The six new tugboats are part of the comprehensive greening program of the Port Authority. This initiative focuses on the renewal and sustainability of the fleet, which accounts for nearly 85% of port-related CO2 emissions. Together with earlier projects like the Hydrotug (the first hydrogen-powered tugboat) and the Methatug (the first methanol-powered tugboat), these new tugboats underline the port’s innovative approach, highlighted a release.   Source: Antwerp, Dec. 1, 2024.

Damen delivers third FCS 2710 Hybrid vessel to Purus Damen Shipyards Group has delivered the third in an order of three Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) 2710 Hybrids to Purus. The vessels, the first of their kind, have been designed to provide low emission crew transfer services to the offshore wind sector. Aligned ambitions for sustainability Purus has the ambition to operate the most environmentally conscious fleet, including crew transfer vessels – a goal aligned with Damen’s aim to become the most sustainable maritime solutions provider. The vessels are fitted with 190 kW battery arrays that enable them to sail zero emissions while in harbour and when loitering at offshore wind farms. In addition to their hybrid capabilities, the FCS 2710 Hybrids are IMO Tier III compliant, with significantly reduced NOX and SOX emissions. With this performance, Purus aims to directly provide its clients with the benefits of reduced emissions and fuel consumption.
