    ❗𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐚: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫?   Are you aware of the hidden biases people experience after burnout?   The latest research by PhD candidate Philippe Sterkens, featured in the Dutch newspaper ‘𝐴𝑙𝑔𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝐷𝑎𝑔𝑏𝑙𝑎𝑑’, reveals a harsh truth—people recovering from burnout face long-term professional setbacks caused by discrimination and stigma surrounding burnout.   𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐏𝐡𝐃 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 that employers fear that people who recovered from burnout are; less healthy, less resilient, and less capable of leading, despite full recovery and the internal growth process that often accompanies burnout recovery. This results in a:   📉 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐚𝐬: People who have recovered from burnout have a higher chance of not getting hired during a job interview. 📈 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐲: A history of burnout reduces opportunities for internal promotions and job advancement, as organisations doubt their ability to lead and handle increased responsibilities. 💼 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐕𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Employees who recovered from burnout have a higher chance of getting laid off in reorganisations.   ❓Want to make your leaders #StressWise and reduce burnout by spotting the early warning signs and intervening more effectively?     🛫 Mijn onderzoek naar burn-out en stigma steekt de Belgische grens over! Vandaag bericht Algemeen Dagblad (NL) immers over mijn studiewerk van de afgelopen jaren. Terugkeren naar het werk na burn-out is sowieso al niet evident – en stigma kan het verrassend moeilijker maken. Wie het volledige artikel wil lezen kan terecht bij de lokale dagbladhandel. Bedankt Sanne Wolters voor het interview en Evelien Brouwers, PhD voor de aanmoediging. 🤩 Aansluitend deel ik ook het heerlijke nieuws dat Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) me de kans geeft om dit onderzoek verder te zetten aan Universiteit Gent als postdoc. Onderzoeksmiddelen zijn schaars, dus het is voor mij een krachtig signaal dat FWO dit project selecteert uit talloze machtige voorstellen. 💪 We gaan voor een arbeidsmarkt waar de juiste mensen op de juiste plaats kunnen werken - ook na burn-out.
