🌐 On Sunday, UN Member States will convene at the Summit of the Future to produce an inter-governmentally negotiated, action-oriented Pact for the Future. This is a pivotal moment to push for stronger corporate accountability in achieving the #SDGs. Nine years since the adoption of the SDGs, voluntary corporate action has fallen short, with only 5% of the 800 most influential companies assessing environmental impacts and no oil and gas companies phasing out fossil fuels. The corporate accountability gap is holding back progress. ➡ To move from a few leading companies changing to entire industries transforming, we need a much stronger push towards corporate accountability. We believe it's time for clear consequences for businesses that don't align with SDG priorities. ➡ The UN and its Member States must articulate what companies are responsible for regarding each global framework. This clarity will enable stakeholders to hold businesses accountable. Therefore, WBA puts forward these high level asks to UN Member States: 1️⃣ The Pact must recognise the need for private sector accountability in global agreements 2️⃣ The Pact must explicitly articulate the role of Member States in ensuring the digital sectors accountability 3️⃣ UN Member States must build on their commitment in the Pact to strengthen private sector accountability and define next steps We stand ready to support this effort with our data on company performance and collaboration with our 400+ multistakeholder Alliance to drive systemic change across industries. The upcoming #COP16 presents a key opportunity to mobilise and enable key sectors to assume their share of responsibility and take bold, transformative action. That's why together with The Nature Conservancy, Business for Nature, WWF and other partners, we urge Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to prioritise biodiversity mainstreaming and integrate nature’s diverse values when implementing the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework, both at the global and national level. While parts of the private sector are starting to act, voluntary actions are not enough. Governments should ensure this transformation through strong policies, regulations and incentives that address the drivers of biodiversity loss. Only through the mobilisation and transformation of key sectors can we halt the degradation of ecosystem integrity, stop deforestation, eliminate overexploitation, address pollution and climate change, and safeguard human rights: all necessary to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and to make peace with nature. Since 2018, organisations across the globe have been adapting the methodology of Ranking Digital Rights (now part of WBA!) to hold big tech and telecom companies accountable locally. What do these organisations have in common? They are engaged in protecting the rights of some of the most marginalised and discriminated against populations worldwide. ⚡As part of this series, in 2024, the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) conducted a follow-up assessment of the freedom of expression and privacy policies of telecom companies in Albania. This work followed up on their 2022 report Hidden in Plain Sight, which examined 13 telecom operators in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, and Serbia. Why revisit Albania? 🔍 In 2023, two of the three major players in Albania’s telecom landscape were acquired by Hungary’s 4iG, which has close ties to the Hungarian government. Following this acquisition, BIRN found persistent, worrisome transparency gaps from the country’s resulting two telcos, newly created One Albania as well as Vodafone Albania. 📢Out now: The Greening Digital Companies 2024 report co-written with our partners at the International Telecommunication Union, which looks at the intersection of the tech industry and climate change by examining the 200 leading tech companies in WBA’s #DigitalInclusionBenchmark. 🌐The report’s 2024 edition provides the first comprehensive overview of #Scope3 corporate value-chain emissions that make up most of the emission footprints of digital companies and considers the environmental impact of #AI. Some key finding’s from this year’s report include: ⚡Greening Digital Companies assesses companies on their data disclosure, targets and performance. Only three companies scored over 90 per cent (Apple, Logitech and Telefonica) overall. Only 70 companies had at least a ‘passing grade’ of 50%, and 27 scored zero. ⚡Top 10 emitting companies – all in the US or East Asia – accounted for 55% of the total, with all but one reporting increased operational emissions in 2022. ⚡Among companies that report all relevant Scope 3 emissions, Scope 1 accounts for 4%, Scope 2 for 15% and Scope 3 for 81%. Scope 3 emissions are on average 6 times greater than Scope 1 and 2 combined. ⚡Generating responses to Chatbot queries accounts for up to 90% of total machine learning cloud computing costs according to research by Amazon Web Services. A ChatGPT inquiry needs almost ten times as much electricity to process as a standard web search ⚡Data centers consumed about 460 TWh of electricity in 2022, a figure which is projected to increase 35% to 100% by 2026. At the upper end of this range, this demand is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumption in Japan. 👉 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/exTmvm6V

🌎 As New York Climate Week 2024 wraps up, we’re reflecting on some impactful discussions that brought together public and private sectors, civil society and global sustainability leaders. Here’s a quick recap of key events: 💠Held in collaboration with Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, CETEx (Centre for Economic Transition Expertise) at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Climateworks Centre, and WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, our event 'Transition planning: moving from principles to practice' explored how to accelerate progress towards integrated transition planning across the ecosystem. The interactive session brainstormed leveraging new tools and frameworks to enhance the credibility of transition planning across the economy and fill any remaining gaps. 💠At the Ford Foundation, discussions centered on how to ensure that human rights are respected in the race to ramp up renewable energy investment and production. The complementary roles of governments, businesses and investors were highlighted in ensuring that #justransition principles are integrated into climate policies. Thank you to Business & Human Rights Resource Centre and Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment for co-hosting. 💠Yesterday, our attention turned to emerging markets. We co-organised a roundtable with Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment on financing energy transitions in Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs). We explored how financing challenges can be addressed for EMDEs and the proactive measures that investors and other financial institutions can take to encourage capital flows to EMDEs. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to these essential discussions on climate, and to our incredible co-hosts for their support in bringing these events to life. These sessions gathered leading voices from across finance, government, business, and civil society to focus on how to ensure the private sector plays a responsible role in driving significant climate progress. #ClimateWeekNYC #JustTransition #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition

We are thrilled to have hosted the third edition of the Alliance Action Forum alongside our Allies, the UN Foundation’s Universal Access Project, and the Business Council for the UN yesterday. This powerful, multi-stakeholder workshop took place in parallel with #UNGA79, focusing on business accountability and action towards global agreements. Building on the outcomes of the #PactfortheFuture we explored how to deepen corporate responsibility within the UN System. Participants exchanged success stories and lessons learned of delivering business commitments on UN mandates and processes. As Nudhara Yusuf, Co-Chair for United Nations Civil Society Conference in Support of Summit of the Future, noted so poignantly in her framing remarks: "There is enough in the Pact, enough hooks to hang our coats on. The real impact is what's next — the accountability." Through continued partnerships, we remain committed to driving accountability and embedding sustainability into the heart of global development. #AllianceActionForum #CorporateAccountability #OurCommonFuture #SDGs
