𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲!  🏃♂️🏃♀️ This October, our teams in the Netherlands and South Africa (Research-Square Engineering Services) will be lacing up for a special cause—a half marathon (ASML) and a parkrun to raise funds for Huis Andrew Murray (HAM), an incredible children’s home in Wellington, South Africa. HAM provides a nurturing environment for 155 children, ages 1-18, offering not just daily support and protection but also access to education and development opportunities. We chose to support HAM because we believe every child deserves a strong foundation and access to quality education—something very close to our hearts. For each kilometer completed by our team, Research-Square will contribute towards the charity to help make a difference in these children's lives. Over the past 5 years, we've built strong connections with South Africa, and now it's our turn to give back to the community. Here are some of Daniel's insights from our conversation with him: 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀? "Although Table Mountain may be flat on top, it still varies. Matching my perception of a flat country with reality was a bigger adjustment than I realized. Nevertheless, the mountains do exist here. They are the people — that’s why they are tall, right? 𝟮. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆? Dutch work culture is efficient, well-planned and consensus-driven. South African work culture is adaptable and focuses on efficient problem solving. In a country where service delivery and infrastructure is lacking, solving a problem now (or now now) creates more time to think of better solutions over time. Thus, it makes sense that more time can be spent on planning and alignment here in the Netherlands, as it is a decently-oiled machine with society looking after it. 𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲? Being able to go on a long cycle towards the sunset and discovering frietjes and biertjes along the way are some of my favourite aspects of living here. “Waarom drie woorden gebruiken als één genoeg is?” — simplicity is the ultimate complexity. Don’t underestimate the directness, it is not rude. Rather, it fosters trust and real action, rarer qualities in today’s world. 𝟰. 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? Keep in mind that it may be easier to find work than accommodation. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and you may be pleasantly surprised with the practicality and breadth of topics that can be discussed. 𝟱. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂? It just takes time to learn the language. Certainly take classes to understand the fundamentals, and immerse yourself into get-togethers, movies, music and more.
