MOSES reef scale models have been tested in the Delta Flume from Deltares as part of the ARISE project!   In the Delta Flume it is possible to simulate high waves to gather information about sedimentation, erosion, wave attenuation, etc.   Boskalis, TU Delft, University of Plymouth, Coastruction and Deltares are currently researching how the installation of artificial reefs could effectively mitigate the effects of rising sea levels on coastal erosion. 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗳𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁  Protecting coastal areas and islands against rising sea levels and the forces of waves requires big equipment and major work. But before interfering in an existing ecosystem, we naturally want to know whether the measures we have devised will hold up in practice. With that in mind, Boskalis recently conducted an interesting and very useful test program at Deltares' well-known Delta Flume in Delft, the Netherlands.    As part of our Artificial Reefs Program, Boskalis is exploring various possibilities to deploy artificial reefs as a coastal protection mechanism. The reasoning is relatively simple. Because when a coastal reef manages to break waves – thereby reducing their force – less erosion occurs on the coast, potentially also reducing the amount of rock needed to protect the vulnerable coast.    Using 150 3D printed scale models of artificial reefs from Coastruction and another 11 modular reefs from ReefSystems, previously installed by Boskalis off the coast of Kenya, this theory was tested at a 1:3 scale. This was done in close cooperation with project leader TU Delft and the University of Plymouth. We are currently analyzing the data and continuing to develop this Building with Nature solution for coastal protection, with the aim of putting this solution into practice on a much larger scale.    Want to know more about our Artificial Reefs Program? Without any maintenance the swamp plants that are placed last year are growing again on these sheet piles! Together with Gemeente Dordrecht and Gebr. De Koning these planters have been installed to create habitats for more biodiversity and a greener street view. When installed on a larger scale, this innovation called SPECTER (Sheet Pile Eco-Territorial Reinforcement) enables regional water authorities (waterschappen) to reach their WFD-goals (KRW-doelen) based on the following contributions: 1) creating habitats for fish 2) improving water quality by facilitating the growth of swamp plants  3) stimulating macrofauna growth To learn more about SPECTER, please click on the link below: https://lnkd.in/gU84SE8

𝗔𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗳 Due to increasing pollution, deteriorating water quality and coral bleaching caused by increased water temperatures, marine scientists declared the Buccoo Reef in Trinidad & Tobago a high-risk area in 1970. Between 1994 and 2008, the coral cover in the 7-square-kilometer reef, one of the country’s three largest and most popular reefs, declined by 28 percent. So an artificial helping hand to help recover the reef is more than welcome. Together with ReefSystems and the Buccoo Reef Trust, we recently installed three artificial reefs consisting of 40 large reef blocks each. The initial results look very promising, because from day one the carefully thought-out design of the artificial reef attracted marine life. In the coming months, the artificial Buccoo Reef will be intensively monitored.   The Buccoo Reef project is part of Boskalis’ Artificial Reefs Program, which is aimed at integrating knowledge, business and collaboration developments that culminate in pioneering (pilot) projects across the globe. In recent years, this has resulted in the installation of different types of innovative artificial reefs in Kenya, Monaco, the Netherlands and Panama. Last month the first newly cultivated corals have been transplanted onto our MOSES-reefs in Aruba!   In September 2023 the first artificial MOSES-reefs were installed along the south coast of Aruba. The goal of this project is to enhance marine biodiversity and improve the livelihood of the people living in the Caribbean region. Through community involvement and in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research, Aruba National Park Foundation (FPNA), ScubbleBubbles Foundation and the University of Aruba, this project has been executed successfully!   The restoration efforts are part of the EU-RESEMBID funded project, 'Turning the Tide'. In Feb. 2024 the first artificial reefs have been installed within the Buccoo Reef in Tobago! In collaboration with The Tobago House of Assembly, The Buccoo Reef Trust and Boskalis, 3 reefs have been installed in different locations within the Buccoo Reef to learn more about how to effectively restore this degraded marine ecosystem in the future. The unique modular artificial reefs from ReefSystems offer a new, scalable and affordable solution to install artificial reefs at low costs. 4 local divers are now able to install 20m² of new reef in only one dive! The next step for large scale restoration is to find funding to set up a local coral cultivation program and a production facility for the modular reef units. Tips are welcome! Last month we successfully set up a new artificial reef project in Tobago! In collaboration with The Tobago House of Assembly, Boskalis, The Buccoo Reef Trust and the local community of Tobago, three identical reefs have been installed on different locations within the Buccoo Reef. With this pilot project we are trying to set up an experiment, where 2 out of the 3 reefs get various corals transplanted on them. By monitoring the effects of the 3 structures over time, we can learn more about how we can effectively restore a larger part of the marine ecosystem within the Buccoo Reef in the future. Last year a production facility for our modular artificial reefs has been set up in Shimoni Kenya. Together with the local community, REEFolution Foundation and Wageningen University & Research, new reefs are produced and installed every month to restore the marine ecosystem. Our ongoing restoration efforts contribute to the growth of new coral reefs and an increase marine populations. We are proud to announce that, due to the succes of this project, we are now expanding the production capacity of the facility. Financed by AFAS Foundation, new molds have been produced and shipped to Kenya, where they are planned to arrive next month! Attractive marine habitats consist of various sized shelter possibilities for different forms of marine life.   The best suited habitats for a healthy and biodiverse marine ecosystem provide walls, overhangs and holes with different microhabitats for various creatures. In collaboration with Wageningen University & Research, the most optimal artificial reef for ecosystem restoration has been designed.   In Kenya 20 of these exact reefs will be built for scientific research. The results will provide insights into the effects of effective reef designs and cultivated coral transplantation on overall biomass increase compared to traditional methods and no intervention at all. The first results look promising!   This research has been financed by AFAS Foundation and Sumthing.
