Over ons
The Climate Centre’s mission is to help the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners reduce the impacts of climate change and extreme-weather events on vulnerable people. The Climate Centre focuses primarily on providing guidance and tools to National Societies and their partners, and fostering the exchange of experience, training and technical back-up for Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers, delegates and managers specializing in the management of disaster risk and health. In the international arena we facilitate access to climate-related funding and advocate for support to the most vulnerable people in debates on climate policy, especially the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the annual UN climate talks, but also related international discussions on development and humanitarian policy and finance. A core objective is to make the best global scientific insights operable at the local level. Key elements include support for awareness-raising and capacity-building, especially in developing countries whose people are the most vulnerable to climate change.

As natural hazards, pandemics, and other crises become increasingly frequent, Red Cross and Red Crescent societies are getting a jump start on emergencies through anticipatory action. Some National Societies in the Middle East and North Africa region are leading the way. As conflict in the Middle East escalates, Lebanon has been at the top of the news as the latest humanitarian crisis to unfold in an already complex region. The Lebanese Red Cross has been at the forefront of emergency response.

People in the US state of Florida were today assessing the damage done by Hurricane Milton in its passage across the peninsula – after Helene the second such storm to hit the south-east US in less than two weeks. Milton made landfall near Siesta Key island off Florida’s west coast late Wednesday, and crossed the entire peninsula, leaving more than 3 million residents without power, dropping more than 12 inches of rain and spawning numerous tornadoes, before heading out into the Atlantic.

Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene swept away entire communities, more than 2,000 Red Crossers are working 24/7 to support families uprooted by the storm, while also preparing for Hurricane Milton’s landfall in Florida expected later today, the American Red Cross said. Even with another potentially lethal hurricane just over the horizon, Red Cross teams are on station across the south-east United States, “committed to providing safe shelter, food, water, and recovery support to families facing unimaginable loss,” the National Society says.

The three-day meeting focused on improving disaster risk management through #AnticipatoryAction, resulting in the “Mombasa 2024 Declaration”. The collective commitment aims to scale up anticipatory action to improve community resilience across Eastern Africa, in line with the IGAD Regional Roadmap. The wrap-up video below highlights key takeaways, including the need for greater government involvement, increased funding, and better system integration. It features perspectives and lessons from fragile settings like #Sudan and #Somalia, grassroots strategies, and the effects of #climatechange on #mentalhealth. The American Red Cross says it has now deployed more than 1,300 personnel on the ground “in multiple states providing shelter, comfort, and relief” after Hurricane Helene’s lethal rampage through the US south-east. “The scale of devastation is beyond words. It’s one of the deadliest storms to ever hit the US, leaving hundreds of miles of destruction and countless lives changed forever,” the National Society said on X/Twitter Thursday.
