A year after the opening of the Container Exchange Route, the project is entering a new phase. The Port of Rotterdam Authority will expand the CER with connections to the Distripark Maasvlakte and the ECT Delta terminal/Hutchison Port Delta II terminal via a main-gate concept. To make waste processing more sustainable, the TU Delft startup geoFluxus developed the 'Waste Profile Platform'. Four companies with large residual flows and waste processing parties in the Rotterdam port area participated in a pilot using this tool. The port of Rotterdam faces major challenges and opportunities arising from the expected growth in container volume to and from the port. One of those is efficiently handling road transport. The most important stakeholders have signed a declaration of intent to join forces in the ‘sector-wide negotiations for container transport by road’. Within the sector-wide negotiations, the challenges are being tackled to improve traffic flow, safety and sustainability of road transport to strengthen the port of Rotterdam’s competitiveness. This EU support mechanism bridges the cost gap for developing hydrogen projects and is essential for the development of sustainable production capacity. The maritime budget specifically helps the maritime sector to decarbonise, which is important for this hard-to-abate sector. Developments are already ongoing with bio-methanol, liquefied bio-methane, and bio-blended fuel oil being bunkered on a regular basis, and bunker procedures are under development for ammonia and liquid hydrogen. 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺-𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗿 (𝗚𝗗𝗦𝗖) 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗱-𝘁𝗼-𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗼-𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻 The Rotterdam-Singapore Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) partners have conducted a successful pilot for the bunkering of mass-balanced liquefied bio-methane at the Rotterdam port on 19 October 2024. A total of 100 tonnes of mass-balanced liquefied biomethane was supplied by Shell to CMA CGM’s liquefied natural gas-powered containership CMA CGM TIVOLI. Produced from waste-based feedstock, the liquefied bio-methane used in this pilot provides a lower-emission alternative to conventional marine fuels. This initiative supports the GDSC’s broader commitment to advancing the adoption of near-zero emission fuels along one of the world’s busiest shipping trade routes. As part of the pilot, Shell issued a Proof of Sustainability certificate verifying that the liquefied bio-methane fuel supplied complies with regulations by the European Union. The certificate will undergo auditing by third-parties accredited by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification-European Union (ISCC-EU). A similar liquefied bio-methane bunkering pilot with full sustainability certification is planned at the Port of Singapore. #portofrotterdam #portofsingapore #energytransition #bunkering
