🌍 Exploring the Future of Circular Design at the Circular Design Forum Summit 24! 🌍 As part of the Circular Design Forum, our oneUppers Maurice Funk and Martine de Haan were thrilled to attend the annual summit last week, where we spoke with people from various companies working in circular innovation, exchanging insights on tackling shared challenges. A key highlight was the launch of the 600-page Circular Electronic Design Guide, created by 60+ experts across 20 organizations, offering invaluable strategies for the circular transition in electronics. We were particularly inspired by: 🔹Seeing the extensive work already being done in circularity across various industries, like Versuni's refurbishment of electronic home appliances, which showcases the potential for sustainable product life extension 🔹The incredible depth of knowledge embedded in the guide, making it an invaluable tool for designing and building sustainable business models As circularity is one of our main pillars in business model innovation, we’re excited to integrate this expertise into our projects. It’s an incredible resource to help us streamline industry knowledge and enhance our approach to circular design. Looking ahead, we’re also preparing for our 2025 session on Circular Business Models, where we’ll continue exploring bridging the say-do gap and scaling circular business models. Stay tuned for more insights!

Lead Business Designer & Venture Builder @ oneUp | Helping clients achieve growth and be sustainable through innovation
Last week, I delved into the latest trends and agri-food innovations at the Future Food-Tech conference in London. Technologies such as molecular farming, cell cultivation, AI-driven formulations, and precision fermentation took centre-stage, with big names focusing on creating tasty, functional, nutritious, and sustainable food solutions. One key takeaway was the 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲. While companies excel in the science, they often struggle with bringing products to market, resulting in 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥&𝗗 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀. Key insights: 𝟭) 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹. 🎯 Validating desirability, feasibility, and viability early is key, as emphasized by Anne Mertens-Hoyng and Bruno Dasque, highlighting the importance of understanding consumer needs. This resonates with our work at oneUp, supporting agri-food clients in de-risking innovations and driving market adoption. 𝟮) 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗺𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀. 📢 Companies face an ongoing tension between educating consumers and simply making better choices the default. The debate on whether nutrient-dense food should be a given or if consumer education and behaviour change is necessary remains. Regardless, ethical and responsible practices are imperative for companies as part of their core strategy. 𝟯) 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁. 🤝 Collaborations involving academia, startups, government bodies, and corporates are vital for sustainable innovation in the agri-food sector. But it’s not just about working together. Creating partnerships with parity, where each player contributes unique strengths, is crucial for success, echoing Zbigniew Lewicki's call for "Parity in inputs and parity in benefits." It’s exciting to see how the future of food is unfolding, but the path from lab to market will require more holistic innovation approaches, deep consumer insights, and a commitment to responsible growth.

Here’s a quick reality check on generative AI: it’s not the cure-all for every business problem. 🛠️ Reality: Generative AI is powerful but works best with specific, well-defined challenges. Think of it as a specialist tool, not a universal solution. 💡 Advice: Clearly define and narrow down your problem before employing AI. Precision in your objectives allows AI to deliver the most effective solutions. So, before you count on AI to tackle all your challenges, remember that its strength lies in its focus. Tailor your expectations and your project scope accordingly! Curious about how to set realistic AI goals for your business? Let’s connect and discuss practical strategies. 🚀 https://lnkd.in/euzUzxZC #GenerativeAI #BusinessStrategy #TechLeadership #OneUpInsights

This week, our Principal Business Designer, Amy Ly, presented to a large group at FrieslandCampina on how Generative AI is transforming customer-centric innovation in the food industry. 🥦 👇 Here are the key highlights: 🔍 Real-Time Insights, Real Impact: Generative AI is changing the game by using live consumer data to create products that truly resonate. Tools like TasteGPT are helping food companies identify real-time taste trends, cutting traditional market research timelines from months to moments. This shift allows companies to innovate faster and hit consumer needs right when they emerge. 💡 Streamlining Innovation at Scale: AI is driving efficiency across product development, customer engagement, and even operational processes. Companies like NotCo are rapidly prototyping plant-based foods that mimic animal products, drastically reducing time-to-market. Likewise, Heineken saved hundreds of thousands of Euros by reusing consumer insights through AI, completing projects in a fraction of the usual time. 📉 De-risking AI Initiatives: The success of AI hinges on solving the right problems. For example, Carrefour’s AI-driven procurement process reduced quote analysis time from 30 minutes to just 10 minutes. But the key to success is ensuring AI initiatives are tied to real customer needs and drive core business metrics—anything less risks becoming a costly distraction. As we continue to explore the transformative potential of Generative AI, it’s clear that the future of food innovation isn’t just about adopting new technologies—it’s about aligning them with real business needs and customer insights. Thank you for the invite Pieter-Joost Struik, Jacco Noordhof! 🔥 Curious about how Generative AI can transform your innovation strategy? 🌱 Last week, our team joined the ReAssembly event organized by Regeneration.VC during NYC Climate Week. The event was filled with valuable insights into creating real regenerative impact. Mark Dijksman and Anand Khandelwal took the stage with Emma van de Ven to discuss “Unlocking Sustainable Impact: Business Model Design for Scalable Carbon Propositions.” 🚀 We also participated in the regenerative agriculture breakfast, exploring practical solutions for farmers. 👨🌾 ❗A staggering 18% of companies are currently on track to reach their net-zero goals by 2050, while 70% of initiatives stall and never reach full-scale implementation. The critical questions we face are: Are we able to make it? 👉 Can we achieve the desired outcomes? 👉 Can the solution be expanded to other regions? Do we have the correct channels in place? Do customers want it? 👉 Is there strong demand from customers? 👉 Does it solve a real problem? Is it financially viable? 👉 Is the return on investment good enough for our organization? 👉 Does it consider synergies and unfair advantages, and strategic goals? The key takeaway from our session was the importance of shifting the focus from sustainability reporting to business models that drive long-term impact, generate new revenue streams, and build resilience for both producers and corporations. Takeaways: ✅ Think beyond reporting: It’s about creating long-term, regenerative solutions that bring real value. ✅ Collaboration is essential: Together, we create a win-win-win for all stakeholders — farmers, businesses, and the planet. ✅ Execution matters: Getting to scale means focusing on the right questions, expertise, and actionable steps. Thanks to everyone who joined the conversation! And a special thanks to Michael Smith, Regeneration.VC, and Emma van de Ven!
