Over ons

MVRDV was set up in 1993 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A research based and highly collaborative design method engages experts from all fields, clients and stakeholders in the creative process. The results are exemplary and outspoken buildings, urban plans, studies and objects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. Early projects by the office, such as the headquarters for the Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO and WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam lead to international acclaim. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way in which the changing conditions are visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram. The office continues to pursue its fascination for and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space using the complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes. The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. Seventy architects, designers and other staff develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process which involves rigorous technical and creative investigation. MVRDV works with BIM and has official in-house BREEAM and LEED assessors. Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

Markthal is 10 years old!🎉 We’re celebrating with a 10-day trip down memory lane to share our 10 favourite Markthal memories. In these past 10 years the Markthal has become a real magnet for visitors, as well as true landmark of Rotterdam. The building attracts around 8.5 million visitors a year, which amounts to 163,000 visitors every week. Additionally, the Markthal has been credited with a significant influence on Rotterdam’s urban landscape, economy, and cultural identity over the last decade. Once primarily known for its port, the success of the Markthal helped the city become more recognised internationally for the innovative architecture and urban design that has been developing here for decades.   Winy Maas was interviewed by Radio Rijnmond this week to reflect on the effect the Markthal has had. "The reactions in Rotterdam for this building were very pleasant, because it wasn’t a ‘simple’ tower but a public space where art has an important role and where you can live. But the impact worldwide was also surprising to me," says Winy. "There was a huge number of different groups that came to visit Rotterdam to look at this alternative way to construct housing for their own respective city or town."   Kim Heinen, manager of Media Relations & Public Affairs at Rotterdam Partners is also positive about the effect of the building on Rotterdam. "The Markthal was really a defining moment for the development of Rotterdam. What we saw when the Markthal opened was a lot of media attention for the building. And there was more interest in Rotterdam as a whole," says Kim. "It allowed us to show other parts of the city as well and it enabled other big, bold projects to really take off. It gave the city more confidence in being more experimental in terms of architecture." Markthal is 10 years old!🎉 We’re celebrating with a 10-day trip down memory lane to share our 10 favourite Markthal memories.   Traveling back to October 2014: hundreds of enthusiastic and curious people surround the Markthal. The streets are alive with performances and a big screen shows the first market products being weighed on a large scale. Stand holders bring their products to the scale, followed by Queen Máxima, who receives the last product to add to the large scale, bringing the Markthal to life. Rotterdam trumpet player André Heuvelman is standing near the Cornucopia artwork, which rises to almost 40 metres high in the Markthal's grand arch. When he starts to play, he sets off a "world parade" that shows off the wide variety of cultures represented in the city of Rotterdam and the Markthal. Artists representing all the countries arise from the building's lower levels to the market hall and perform to showcase these cultures. With the completion of this performance, the Markthal was officially opened to the general public. Stay tuned for more fun facts and memories of the Markthal! You can look back on the opening by watching the reportage of RTV Rijnmond from back then here: https://lnkd.in/eGiSvqUX Provast | INBO | Royal HaskoningDHV | Peutz Consult GmbH | Techniplan Adviseurs | Octatube | JP van Eesteren | Mobilis TBI | Martens en Van Oord | Arno Coenen & iris roskam

How do we bring heart into public housing?❤️ We’re doing this by redeveloping the Faneuil Gardens public housing complex in Boston into a vibrant and inclusive community. Our masterplan for Faneuil Gardens replaces the outdated 1940s apartment complex with five modern buildings featuring high-quality mixed-income affordable housing, ample greenery, live-work artists spaces, and a new community centre at the heart of a public boulevard. Not only does this project guarantee homes for all current residents, it also adds 183 new income-restricted units, addressing Boston’s housing shortage and promoting neighbourhood stability. The building was originally built for WWII veterans in the 1940s and is currently a state-funded public housing estate located in Brighton. It consists of ten buildings which are currently home to six hundred residents from low- and moderate-income households, with a rich mix of cultural backgrounds and multi-generational families. The redevelopment masterplan addresses the immediate needs of current residents while laying the foundation for long-term sustainability through four key ambitions: 🌐🔗Connectivity Improved pedestrian connections that link to the surrounding neighbourhood and McKinney Park. 🤝💬Engagement An active community heart and green outdoor spaces hosting diverse uses. 👨👩👧👦✨Inclusivity Accessible units for a variety of household types and communal spaces for all age groups. 🌱💪Resilience Climate-adaptive measures such as flood preparedness, construction using local and recycled materials and biodiverse planting. Markthal is 10 years old!🎉 We’re celebrating with a 10-day trip down memory lane to share our 10 favourite Markthal memories.   Today we’re looking back on the spectacular construction of Markthal, which began in 2009. The site is historically located at an old dike along the river Rotte, making the soil extremely unstable and wet. To provide a solid basis for Markthal’s foundations, 2,500 heavy concrete piles were hammered into the wet soil.   The depth of the construction was as much as 15 metres, with ground water running at a depth of 3 metres below street level. Once the walls were secured, pumps were brought in to excavate the site until a dept of 8 metres, allowing archaeologists to research the site.    To excavate 15 metres below street level without destabilising the walls, the Markthal site was filled with water, similar to lowering a bucket into water. Guided by GPS, cranes on floating platforms removed the soil, with a custom-designed sludge piston used to avoid damaging the piles.   In summer 2011, divers in heavy-duty suits laid reinforcements for the concrete floor underwater. Over 72 hours, 1,500 truckloads of concrete were poured. As the concrete hardened, a dragon boat race marked the farewell to Rotterdam's temporary lake. By December 2011, the site was pumped dry and the construction of the arch could start!   If you’d like to find out more on the construction of Markthal, watch this episode of "How Did They Build That?" on Youtube! https://lnkd.in/ei3Wq8Cy Provast | INBO | Royal HaskoningDHV | Peutz Consult GmbH | Techniplan Adviseurs | Octatube | JP van Eesteren | Mobilis TBI | Martens en Van Oord | Arno Coenen & iris roskam

Markthal is 10 years old!🎉 We’re celebrating with a 10-day trip down memory lane to share our 10 favourite Markthal memories.   Today we’re travelling back to October 2004 when, together with Provast, we won the competition organised by the Gemeente Rotterdam for the design and construction of a market hall at the Binnenrotte, the historic birthplace of Rotterdam. The assignment was to create a covered market hall to be an extension of the existing open air Binnenrotte market. The municipality also wanted to increase the number of inhabitants in this eastern part of the city centre. The programme developed therefore included housing, parking, and a market hall.   The obvious solution would have been to come up with two ‘simple’ residential blocks with a covered marketplace in-between. But we came with a better response: a horseshoe-shaped arch that would integrate the market hall stands with the apartments, offering residents views into the lively market below. This arch creates an open, inviting atmosphere while maximizing the use of space. It turns the building into a striking visual landmark.   Stay tuned for more fun facts and memories of 10 years of Markthal! Buildings are currently responsible for 39% of global energy related carbon emissions. But what if there was a way to zero carbon architecture? It is critically important for the construction industry to understand its current CO2 emissions, and the potential for reduction or even storage in climate positive projects. On October 2 and 3, our partner Jan Robin Knikker and associate director Hui-Hsin 慧昕 Liao 廖 will give lectures on redefining architecture and the difficult way to zero carbon architecture. These events are hosted in collaboration with the Lih Pao Foundation at Eslite Spectrum Songyan in Taipei. How do we shape the future of the modern workspace? We’re doing so by introducing “Work & Play” to Munich! Our design for MONACO has been revealed. Designed for Rock Capital Group, this office building continues the transformation of the Werksviertel district by introducing a new synergy between work and play. With warm and playful materials, MONACO prioritises collaboration and bonding, alongside traditional desk work. A six-storey cubic block clad in reclaimed brick forms the “work” portion of the concept, accommodating office spaces. On the north-eastern end, climbing its way up and over this block, is the “play” section of the proposal. The façades have reclaimed bricks and colourful shingles made by Pretty Plastic, a material created entirely from plastic waste. Inside MONACO offers flexible workspaces, a rooftop terrace, and spaces designed for co-worker interaction, including a forum for lectures and a ‘biergarten’. This forward-thinking office building embodies a new philosophy for workplace design, responding to the growing demand for freedom, flexibility, and fun in the post-pandemic era. From Shenzhen to Amsterdam, we are a two-time finalist for the International Highrise Award with our projects Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre and Valley!🏆   For The Shenzhen Women & Children’s Centre, the building’s structure was reused - an approach which is much more sustainable than demolishing and rebuilding. The building was transformed from an old mixed-use tower into a vibrant and multicoloured service centre for mothers and their children.   Valley is an attempt to bring a green and human dimension back to the inhospitable office environment of Amsterdam Zuidas. With catering establishments and shops on the ground floor, offices on the bottom seven floors and, above that, 200 apartments in many shapes and sizes, Valley is the first building in the Zuidas where working, living, and entertainment are mixed.   Find more information on the award and the nominees here! https://lnkd.in/eHU5hYyN   Stadt Frankfurt am Main | Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) | DekaBank Deutsche Girozentrale 📷 Ossip van Duivenbode & Zhi Xia
