How much space will Amsterdam need for the circular economy to thrive over the next 10-20 years? What are the preferred locations for a thriving circular economy in the city of Amsterdam? Those are the questions Metabolic and PosadMaxwan are working to answer in collaboration with Gemeente Amsterdam. 🚀 With ambitious targets—a 50% reduction in primary raw material use by 2030 and a fully circular system by 2050—the city faces a complex challenge. Space is limited, and material flows are intricate. Translating Amsterdam’s bold strategies into spatial plans that work for the circular economy is critical. This is where we step in. Our mission: to bridge the gap between high-level goals and real-world solutions. We are excited to announce that we kicked off the first phase, conducting expert interviews to map the spatial needs for this transition. Our goal: ensure the circular economy is integrated into future spatial-economic plans and infrastructure strategies. 🌍 🔄 Stay tuned for updates as we help shape Amsterdam’s sustainable future! 🏙️ 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝘀—𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. This 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, we celebrate cities as engines of sustainable transformation. They house over half of the global population yet produce 75% of carbon emissions. With urban centers projected to reach nearly 70% of the global population by 2050, they hold unique power to drive a sustainable economy. When we look at cities as interconnected systems, new possibilities open up: ways to cut resource use, reduce waste, and design spaces that harmonize with the planet’s boundaries. We advise cities to embrace circular practices and robust data tracking to lead global sustainability efforts. By optimizing material flows, lowering energy use, and promoting local resilience, cities can lead the way toward a regenerative future. Metabolic’s 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻 offers cities a clear starting point, highlighting high-impact areas and setting measurable, actionable goals to achieve a regenerative economy. 🌍 How regenerative agriculture will shape our future: insights from the OP2B coalition's journey. Metabolic is proud to have contributed as technical advisors and co-authors (Maëla Porcheron and Josca Breeman) on #WBCSD OP2B's 5-Year Progress Report, highlighting regenerative agriculture's critical role in transforming food systems. Key areas addressed in the report: 🌱Scaling transition finance to support farmers 🌱Fostering public-private collaboration to align policies and create an enabling environment 🌱 Aligning metrics and creating transparent reporting to drive investment in regenerative agriculture “Five years ago, the focus was mainly on carbon. Today, OP2B has redefined regeneration as a holistic, biodiversity-centered approach. This report highlights the progress made and the need for unified action to scale regenerative practices." - Maëla Porcheron, Senior Consultant, Agrifood & Biodiversity, Metabolic. Committed to advancing this urgent transition, we support efforts to drive investment and public-private collaboration, accelerating regenerative agriculture’s progress toward a resilient, biodiverse, and equitable future. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗦𝗥𝗗 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗽𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆? A systems approach is key. Climate transition plans that lack a systemic perspective can unintentionally shift risks, disrupt supply chains, harm human rights, or even contribute to biodiversity loss. For example, switching to a low-carbon product that requires three times more land may address your carbon goals, but jeopardize your biodiversity targets. Without considering these interdependencies, your climate strategy may become inefficient and require reworking as new issues arise. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼👇 By addressing root causes and considering the ripple effects of climate decision-making in other areas, a systems lens ensures your plan goes beyond regulatory box-ticking. Together, we can co-create effective action plans with your stakeholders and develop customized decision-making frameworks, accounting for material impacts on climate, nature, and people across your operations and value chain. 👉 How? We are pleased to share that Metabolic and our platform, Link, have been recognized in the new Integrating Nature Tech: A Guide for Businesses, a joint collaboration by Nature4Climate, the Nature Tech Collective , KPMG, the Climate Collective, and Serena. This comprehensive report highlights how nature tech solutions are supporting companies in addressing critical challenges like biodiversity loss, deforestation, and water use. We are proud that Link was included as an example of how digital tools can help businesses understand their ecological footprint and guide their journey toward becoming nature-positive and to see the contributions of our colleagues Josine oude Lohuis and Andrew McCue acknowledged. The report also features a case study on the Dutch retail chain HEMA, which used Link for its first nature baseline assessment, gaining essential insights to build a more sustainable approach across its value chain. 🚨 The 30x30 target for the ocean needs stronger action 🚨 With less than six years left to protect 30% of the world's oceans, time is running out. Our latest report commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Initiative, and produced with the Marine Conservation Institute, SkyTruth, and Campaign for Nature, reveals that only 8.3% of global marine areas are under protection, and just 2.8% are effectively protected. Nations must urgently step up their marine conservation efforts if we are to stop biodiversity loss and safeguard the oceans that provide food, livelihoods, and climate regulation. The report shows that protection must go beyond designations to stop harmful practices like industrial fishing and oil extraction. We will discuss these findings further in Cali, Colombia, at COP16. 🌱 Turning Nature into a Business Strategy! Measuring environmental impacts is important, but it often frames the relationship between businesses and nature as external—suggesting that the consequences are distant or indirect, something to worry about later. This approach alone rarely makes a strong economic case for action. On the other hand, understanding dependencies takes an inside-out view, highlighting how deeply businesses are intertwined with and reliant on nature. This creates a stronger economic incentive to protect ecosystems now. That’s why we need to shift our focus, from just measuring impacts to fully understanding dependencies and nature-related risks. 🌍 Want to learn more about leveraging nature as a strategic asset?
