For the last two week, our CEO Stephan Rutten traveled to Boston, New Bedford, New London, New York and finally Atlantic City as part of the Dutch innovation mission for offshore wind. The advanced optical seabed mapping drones by Lobster Robotics provide three essential benefits to the fledgling US offshore wind market: - Automation: relieves the strain on workforce development in the early stages - Cost-effectiveness: rather than fully equipped ROV vessels, vessels of opportunity like fishing boats can be used to carry out advanced surveys. - Safety: the underwater drone is compact and requires only a single operator. Less people offshore and no heavy lifting reduces the risk of accidents. It was a fruitful two weeks with lots of new connections made! Did you know that seagrass covers only 0.1% of the ocean floor, yet stores an estimated 18% all organic carbon in the ocean? These beautiful habitats also filter pathogens out of the water, act as nurseries for thousands of species, from seahorses to starfish, and by trapping sediment make for a resilient coastline. There are many initiatives to restore and protect seagrass meadows, led by NGOs such as Project Seagrass but also by industry giants like Boskalis and Van Oord (shoutout to the Dutch!) Monitoring progress is an essential part of restoration, both to evaluate novel seeding methods, and to spread awareness to local communities about the 'underwater jungles' in their backyards! Lobster Robotics is a deep tech startup that provides high resolution optical seabed mapping and monitoring services. We recently did a technology demonstration in Denmark, showcasing our advanced underwater drones. Advantages over contemporary methods are: 1. Precise: the LobsterMaps are geo-referenced out of the box, enabling consistent monitoring and comparison over time 2. Easy: just put the Scout in the water, press a button and lean back for the rest of the day. We mapped 1500 m2 in a few hours while sipping coffee! 3.
