Serving as the final stop on ISWA's #RoadtoCOP29, Marc Tijhuis joined a special conference at ECOMONDO - ITALIAN EXHIBITION GROUP this week in Rimini to present the case for climate change mitigation opportunities within the waste and resource sector. The message is clear: advanced and sustainable waste treatment solutions can prevent up to 20% of global GHG emissions, making it one of today's most significant yet untapped climate mitigation strategies. ISWA heads to COP29 Azerbaijan with a mission to urge member-states to incorporate integrated waste and resource management strategies and initiatives into their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to combat climate change. An estimated 2-3 billion people still lack access to proper solid waste collection, and even more suffer from inadequate disposal methods, leading to devastating impacts on public health, the environment, and global emissions. On October 24, CIWM and the ISWA International Solid Waste Association Young Professionals Group (YPG) is hosting a crucial webinar on addressing the ongoing global waste emergency. This event will explore how we can expand waste services to reach the billions who are currently left behind. The distinguished panel includes: Josh Cottom (University of Leeds), lead author of groundbreaking research on uncollected waste as a major source of plastic pollution. Lucy Stevens (Practical Action), who is implementing people-centered waste solutions in low-income countries. Maya Zaatar (RWA Group), working on extending waste services to underserved communities globally. Michelle Wilson (WasteAid), championing an inclusive circular economy for the benefit of both people and the planet.
