Thanks to NLHydrogen, HINICIO and Berenschot to provide key note speakers to this workshop: 1. Where does your fascination for green hydrogen come from? "Green energy has been the constant theme throughout my career. In the 1980s, the energy transition didn’t exist yet, and wind turbines were ‘forbidden.’ After my studies, I focused on energy savings and cogeneration. When the liberalization of the energy market started, I said ‘yes’ to a crazy adventure: establishing a Dutch electricity exchange. I firmly believe that market forces help drive the energy transition. This transition is crucial, and it must be fast, efficient, and affordable. The HyXchange hydrogen exchange helps to accelerate this transition." 2. What problem does the HyXchange platform solve? "The Dutch industry has long used grey hydrogen, but this needs to become green or at least blue. The current issue is that most industrial processes require continuous energy, but solar and wind energy are not always available. While green hydrogen can be stored effectively in salt caverns, storage capacity is still limited and not accessible for all regions, leading to a mismatch between supply and demand. With the HyXchange project, we clarify the necessary products and conditions for hydrogen trading. By increasing market transparency, we stimulate the trade and use of hydrogen." 3. Too many or too few regulations? “A European system for certificates is being developed to guarantee that hydrogen is green. It’s a good principle: one system for trade and imports across Europe. That’s an admirable goal, but it also makes things very complicated. On the one hand, this makes sense, but on the other, the rules for hydrogen are much stricter than the existing rules for green electricity and biogas. Additionally, certified hydrogen must be traceable in detail, which is complex given the limited infrastructure. Green hydrogen is still unfamiliar, which leads to regulatory overreach in Brussels, piling rule upon rule. As a result, we risk missing the opportunity and remaining dependent on natural gas.” 4. How can it be different? “It would be better to introduce these strict European regulations in phases, giving the young hydrogen market time to develop further. In the meantime, we can use the existing guarantee-of-origin system, which allows energy providers to prove that their energy comes from renewable sources. With a new commodity like hydrogen, the legislation should facilitate development, not hinder it. On a positive note, we are making progress in the market. In a few years, there will be a national market with a spot and balancing market, and eventually, a price indication for long-term supply contracts.”

Afgelopen vrijdag als HyXchange sessie geleid bij het Groene waterstofhuis event van GroenvermogenNL. Met inleidingen Bernhard van Haersma Buma, Dr. Samira Farahani en Joachim Schellekens over #waterstof #certificering: hoge informatiedichtheid! Opinie zaal en deelnemers: EU #H2 certificaten nog weinig praktijkgericht, zorgen voor hogere #risico's voor investeringen in #waterstof. Wel graag #EU certificaten voor broodnodige #harmonisatie en voor #multi-source supply (zie onze #marktsimulatie!) maar dan als #bookandclaim tijdens opbouwfase #backbone. Graag flexibeler, met uitstel regel #additionaliteit. Bijval ook voor recente #Duitse brief daarover aan European Commission. Wat is het Nederlandse standpunt hierbij? Mooie event, zie uit naar meer!

Today, again for HyXchange presenting our hydrogen market development at the #Beyondgas2024 in Oldenburg(D), so well-organized by Dr. Peter Rügge and his team! Good atmosphere at this conference bringing a positive reality check, aimed at practical implementation! Our next step: start-up hydrogen markets in industrial harbour regions. With local balancing according to outcome of our market simulation: variations in green hydrogen production to be hourly balanced by a mix of blue hydrogen, imports and storage – depending on regional availability and development. Meanwhile, marginal costs for green hydrogen have been dropping versus blue and gray during  the summer (see our HYCLICX marginal cost indicator directly visible at https:hyxchange.nl/hyclicx) even as fixed costs have been trending upward; studying the inclusion of these fixed cost into the indicator, to be continued! #hydrogen #market #balancing #exchange #harbour #index #simulation #import

🇪🇺The updated Hydrogen Infrastructure Map is now available online. This very useful tool is updated twice a year for hydrogen distribution, transmission, import terminals, storage, demand and production towards 2030, 2040 and 2050.
