Congratulations to our Innovator Nature Coatings for receiving a grant from the USDA Forest Service! 🌳 This milestone supports the innovator's significant work with BioBlack TX™, a bio-based pigment made from FSC-certified wood waste, proving once again that wood waste is the new black. 🖤 The grant will drive innovation in natural pigments, reducing reliance on petroleum-based alternatives while creating value and new markets for low-value wood waste. By using wood waste from US forests, this initiative helps prevent forest fires and insect outbreaks, diverts waste from landfills, and generates significant carbon savings. It also fosters the development of new technologies and jobs across the USA, ensuring a more circular and responsible future for fashion. Joining forces towards a circular textile future 💪🏫 The EU-funded T-REX Project | Textile Recycling Excellence, of which Fashion for Good is a partner, has collaborated with Race Against Waste, and the race concluded in October with impressive results! 7 teams of students from 5 schools actively participated in the Textile Race in the Dutch municipality of Westland, resulting in: ✅ almost 6000 kilograms of used textiles collected (the size of an average truck!) ✅ 54 garments repaired ✅ 1 clothing swap The feedback received from the teachers illustrates just how powerful engagement activities like this can be: 💬 “The Textile Race does not only bring the kids but also the whole neighbourhood together in the race against Textile Waste.” 💬 “The amount of kilograms of textile we collected is incredible, but also a bit shocking. To realise how many kilograms we are dumping is an eye-opener.” 💬 “The guest lecture was not only an eye-opener for the kids, but also for us teachers.” Assessing how citizens can be empowered to actively contribute to the paradigm shift towards a circular value chain in the textile industry is one of the T-REX Project’s goals. We’re happy to share that our Innovator SPINNOVA® has teamed up with premium bag brand ASK Scandinavia to bring a naturally dyed handbag to the market in 2025. 👜✨ The visually striking yet practical work tote bag is made with fabric that contains 30% wood-based SPINNOVA® fibres and 70% cotton. The fabric has been dyed with Natural indigo Ltd Finland’s natural dye, made from Paulig Group’s coffee waste. “Using natural dyes to create the bag’s colour highlights the comprehensive sustainability approach considered during the design phase. Silk-tacular fibre beyond the cocoons 🐛 Silk is one of the oldest fibres that humans have been weaving into a fabric — originating in China, silk is a natural protein fibre that comes from the cocoons of silkworms and is the only natural filament fibre, meaning that one filament from one cocoon can measure 1000 yards! Commonly considered a low-waste, renewable and biodegradable fibre, more sustainable than many others, the production of silk still raises concerns about water consumption, chemical usage, environmental pollution, and its impact on worker and animal rights. Silk cocoons are made up of one continuous thread — known as a filament — that gives silk its smoothness and lustre. To ensure that the thread remains continuous, the silkworm has to be prevented from emerging from the cocoon, making the process harmful to silkworms. Thankfully, there are many new innovations and promising alternatives to traditional silk emerging, that use less water, less energy, no harmful chemicals and are cruelty-free:    🕸️ Spintex manufactures pure and strong silk fibres spun from water-based silk solution, partly sourced from pre-consumer waste as well as peace silk, a type of silk that does not harm the silkworm. 🧵 Cocoon Biotech has developed proprietary methods to isolate the silk protein (fibroin) from silkworm cocoons, creating EcoSilk™— an all-natural, biodegradable, and versatile material that can be used as a sustainable ingredient in various healthcare, consumer, and industrial products. The collection, focused on evening-appropriate gowns and separates, will incorporate cycora® polyester, a high-performance material made from discarded textiles that would otherwise be destined for landfills or incineration. cycora® provides a circular solution by regenerating textiles into new, high-quality fabrics, overcoming the performance limitations of conventional recycled materials. “Through cycora®, Ambercycle is helping brands like Ref bring closed-loop garments to the market. This is an especially important step forward for circular fashion when you consider that more than half of global fiber production is composed of fossil fuel-derived synthetics like polyester and, at present, nearly all of it ends up in landfill after its first life", says Kathleen Talbot, Chief Sustainability Officer and VP of Operations at Reformation. Agricultural or farm waste is a significant aspect of the farming industry that demands careful consideration. It counts as biomass or secondary produce from plants that are primarily not grown for textiles or materials but are grown for other purposes like food, medicines, etc. Many farmers turn to agricultural burning to manage this waste, which they view as the most effective and cost-efficient method for clearing land, fertilising soil, and preparing it for new plantations. However, these blazes and the wildfires that spread from them are the world’s largest source of black carbon, a threat both to human and environmental health. Our leading innovator, AltMat addresses this issue by using a mixture of mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic processes to produce natural cellulose fibre and yarn from the agricultural waste of food and other crops (like hemp oil, hemp CBD, linseed, pineapple, etc.).
