Today we drove the first metres of our World Record Attempt! Those were also our first metres on the public road and the route of the Elfstedentocht. Before driving off, we had a large event in Leeuwarden where we showed our exhibition, gave out some “Koek & Zopie”, and listened to motivating talks of deputy Matthijs de Vries of Provincie Fryslân and Erwin Jongh of Toyota Nederland. After some last preparations, we finally drove off after a year of hard work, which was an emotional moment and a big reward for our team. In the next few days, we are focusing on driving many laps of the Elfstedentocht and are hunting for the world record! WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT 2024 FINISHED! Our tank is empty, which means our World Record Attempt has come to an end! We have driven 1273 kilometres on less than 1.45 kilograms of hydrogen, which comes down to 6 full rounds of the Elfstedentocht. With this, we have come extremely close to the world record of Toyota, set at 1360 kilometres. Even though we weren't able to break the record, we are still very proud that we are the first student team to build a street legal hydrogen powered car and drive this astonishing distance on the public road. We are now holders of a Missie H2 hydrogen medal! During our start event in Leeuwarden, where we celebrated the start of our world record attempt, Erwin Jongh from Toyota Nederland gave a talk about the importance of (our) collaboration. During his talk, Erwin challenged us to beat the current world record of Toyota for driving 1360 km on one tank of hydrogen on the public road, which they set with their Toyota Mirai. However, we did not know that Erwin had another surprise in store for us. He made our day even better by handing us one of the MissieH2 hydrogen medals. This medal is handed out to the frontrunners in the hydrogen industry. As only a total of 20 medals are handed out, combined with the fact that this award had only been given to individuals, we were really surprised to receive one as a team! This made us even more motivated to prove that our car is able to drive a world record on the public road and to make an impact on the industry. Currently, we are working really hard to realise this goal! Our team Eco XIV received this medal, but we couldn’t do this without the knowledge and foundation of all the previous Eco-Runner teams. Therefore we want to mention that this medal is a combined effort of all our team members and alumni! Next week Monday, June 17th, we will officially start our World Record Attempt! After a month of intensive testing, the Eco-Runner XIV is now officially street-legal, which means we can attempt to set a world record on the public road! Our goal is to drive 2056 kilometres on a single tank (1.45kg) of hydrogen. This will take place in Friesland, on the route of the famous Elfstedentocht. We will be driving for multiple days through all the eleven cities of Friesland. The World Record Attempt will start with an event on the Oldehoofsterkerkhof in Leeuwarden on June 17th at 13:00. At this event, we will show our exposition one last time, offer traditional snacks and drinks, and give a few speeches. At around 15:30, the starting signal will be given and we will officially attempt to set a world record!  Of course, everyone is invited to come take a look at this special moment, the true highlight of our year.  If you can’t make it, we will keep you updated through our socials and a dedicated ‘world record attempt’ page on our website. Already 3 weeks ago, we held our Car Reveal! We look back on an amazing evening, filled with enthusiasm and excitement. Yesterday we revealed the Eco-Runner XIV! After focusing on how hydrogen can play a role in the green energy system of the future and sharing some stories of our production phase, the Eco-Runner XIV drove its first meters in public! By building the first street-legal Eco-Runner, we want to show people and industry that it is time to move from concept to reality, and start realising our plans for a sustainable future. With this car, we aim to set a new world record for the furthest distance driven on a single tank of hydrogen, on the public road. Next up for our license plate: the hydrogen test, EMC test and dynamic test.
