How can we SCALE regeneration? What the unexpected complexities to be addressed when pushing for ambitious scale to the good visions we want to co-create? A book was suggested during the recent Autumn Gathering of For Good Leaders: SCALE by #geoffreywest The key insight pushes us to rethink growth. Not just as a pursuit of "bigger," but as a sophisticated balance of sustainability, innovation, and resilience. Scaling isn’t just a science; it’s an art that requires foresight, adaptability, and a commitment to the long game. What else struck us? 1. Universal Patterns of Growth Similar principles govern growth across biology, cities, and companies. The fundamental “laws of scaling” that apply to organisms also shape organizations, showing leaders that growth requires understanding these deep, universal patterns. 2. The Power of Networks At the heart of effective scaling is the role of networks—both human and structural. The interconnectedness of people, resources, and ideas which we are living at For Good Leaders, that we are seeing made evident with the #BCorp movement and its principle of #Interdependence are ways we are exporing. Leaders who cultivate robust networks, both within and outside their organizations, create a foundation for resilient and dynamic growth. 3. Economies of Scale and Diminishing Returns Growth, while essential, isn't endlessly efficient. As organizations scale, they experience both efficiencies and unique challenges. Economies of scale eventually lead to diminishing returns and even collapse if not carefully managed. Leaders should be mindful of the "hidden costs" of growth and ensure their organizational structures evolve accordingly. 4. Innovation as an Essential Lifeline Sustained scaling requires more than linear growth—it demands exponential innovation. The pace of innovation must outstrip the increasing demands of a growing organization. This means leaders need to prioritize continuous innovation and adaptive strategies to stay ahead of inevitable “growth limits.” 5. The Art of Rejuvenation and Change West argues that organisms, cities, and companies all face “ticking clocks” due to the natural life cycle of growth. For organizations, this necessitates strategic rejuvenation and transformational change to maintain relevance and vitality over time. Leaders must focus on flexible frameworks, open-minded thinking, and embracing change as constants. HERE THE LINK TO THE BOOK: https://amzn.to/4fw99KG The urgency is clear We are keen to hear from you of your own ideas on how to make SCALE happen, with that balance of growth of impact, understanding the many ramifications of every decision, adopting an explorer mindset. What would you suggest? How are you moving forward the exploration and application of SCALE, FOR GOOD? Thank you Marcello Palazzi for that enlightened "overnight" read of such a timely topic.

BUSINESS AT CROSSROADS?  How does this title of the For Good Leaders autumn gathering matter to you and to the #legacay of your leadership? Crossroads are crucial decision points with a far reaching future. When does the future start? Generally, future starts when we have major changes, as Eric Ezechieli stated "we are here to make the future start!". Marcello Palazzi highlighted the power in our hands "There are 350 M companies in the world to lead the revolution!" The PROVOCATION we heard from Hans Stegeman: People think that an economic forecast is a reality! But an economic model is actually based on the past. It’s a useful tool based on a lot of assumptions. The big problem is that once the model is out no one looks at those assumptions. All these models don't understand tipping points and their planet changing effects. The NARRATIVE How is it that we are in a story, that we cannot change? If economics and finance is all a story that we make up, then we should be able to change it. All the solutions in sustainable finance are shallow solutions. It takes a lot of energy to disclose what you do without the obligation of really changing anything. We need deeper points of discussion. What other decisions can I take for the longer term?   Lorenzo Fioramonti shared the need to reinvent ourselves to unleash our unfulfilled potential. We are leaving messages in a bottle for future generations. We need to avoid repeating what we have heard instead be advocates for change, introduce new ideas. We need a structural and systemic change, looking at how we collectively can be part of radical change. Bill clark's provocation:  Let's look at trust: the least trusted group nowadays? Politicians and journalists. The most trusted (see Edelman Trust Barometer)? business leaders. We need these business leaders to deserve this trust with urgent climate policies living fully their #legacy.    Eric added "If all #BCorps" in Italy were put together into one company, it would be the biggest company in Italy with 60BN collective revenue! PROVOCATION ON TRUE PRICE of products. We need companies to disclose the true price to let consumers know what they are really buying and the impact it is having, the sum of the supply chain impact of the product you are about to buy. Aurelia Petrov from Innate Motion: We need to let go of the weapon of smartness, let go the knower and embrace the learner. We need to learn empathy, drop the judgement, unleash the innate capacity that used to be a survival tool but today keeps us focusing on our present instead of what we need to aim for. Recommended reading Christophe Fauconnier book on the human growth code. Mònica Casabayó, PhD "inspiring and thought-provoking conference in a magical setting. I can’t begin to list all the meaningful conversations and amazing people I met." We need to stop asking what we need and ask what we want.  We need to PUSH with a narrative that leads change in society.

Reflections on the For Good Leaders Autumn Gathering in Rome: A Call to Regenerate Our Future Together. A plan to induce 140,000 enterprises to adopt the Benefit Corporation legislation by 2030. Just one of the outputs of action driven conversations with change leaders about crucial topics in the stunning locations of Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's Gardens and Palazzo Ferraioli with over 150 changemakers from around the globe. Leaders from diverse sectors came together, driven by the vision of a regenerative economy and deeply inspired by the locations and atmosphere creating some of the most uplifting and useful conversations leading to action. "Two amazing days of inspiration, connection and action at the For Good Leaders autumn gathering in Rome" shared Samuele Tini. Giles Slinger commented "What’s more important, stories or actions? If finance and economics are just a story we made up, we can change them, right? Is what Hans Stegeman challenged us with.  Then Dr Lorna Gold board president of the Laudato Si' Movement – the economist who identified the ‘sharing economy’ – took the story of Pope Francis’s Laudato Si' Movement and converting it into millions of people’s co-operative actions. The event reminded me yet again to stop focusing on solutions, because listening to and learning from other people’s stories actually gets a lot more done" In Ferry Kamp 🌱's words "Two amazing days of inspiration, connection and action" We engaged in powerful dialogues and action-oriented sessions around our shared mission to drive meaningful change across environment, entrepreneurship, and energy. Highlights included transformative insights from the Mayor of Rome #RobertoGualtieri on the collaboration between public and private sectors to build a regenerative economy, and Monica Lucarelli’s ambitious goal of transitioning 140,000 enterprises into Benefit Corporations by 2030—an inspiring commitment to sustainable growth in Rome. Topics we covered in those stunning palaces and enchanted garden included: ✅ Finance and governance for impact ✅ Strategies for a regenerative economy ✅ Reimagining growth to be human-centered ✅ Accelerating sustainable food systems 🌱 We are all grateful for the inspiring contributions from so many leaders and the new found alliances that will bring about future regenerative actions. Together, we are ready to accelerate change and contribute to a future where growth serves both people and planet. Thank you to Marcello Palazzi, Paolo Di Cesare , Eric Ezechieli , NATIVA, Innate Motion , and all those working tirelessly to lead this transformation. #ForGoodLeaders #RegenerativeFuture #ImpactLeadership #SustainableInnovation
