𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚. #Digitalhealthtechnologies are transforming pharmacy services across Africa, enhancing access, choice, and affordability of healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this shift as consumers turned to online platforms to purchase health-related goods and services, such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and insurance. As a result, online pharmacy revenue in #Africa skyrocketed from $190 million in 2019 to over $560 million by 2022. This rapid growth highlights the need for robust regulations to govern the sector. A 2023 study by Salient Advisory assessed the regulatory frameworks for online pharmacies across 15 African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, and Senegal. Most of these nations have laws and policies governing pharmacy practice and drug distribution, overseen by national regulatory bodies. However, regulations specifically for online pharmacies are still developing. 🔑 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬: 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 (Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, etc.) is leading the evolution of online pharmacies. #Nigeria, #Kenya, and #Ghana have the most active ecosystems, with 20–40 online pharmacy operators. High mobile and internet penetration, especially in Ghana (140% mobile penetration, 68% internet penetration), supports this growth. Countries like 𝐆𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚, 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚 have approved and published regulations for online #pharmacies, with Nigeria being the only country with primary legislation specifically mentioning online pharmacies South Africa, Ghana, and Nigeria stand out as having the most advanced regulatory ecosystems in Africa. 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚, however, lags, with fewer online pharmacies and lower internet penetration (15% in #Niger, 46% in #Senegal). Yet, mobile penetration remains high (>90% in most countries). 💡𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲. ✨ To strengthen regulations for online pharmacies, countries should establish accreditation mechanisms, verify patients and #consumers, and enforce sanctions against unlicensed operators. ✨Pilot projects in countries without existing #online #pharmacy regulations can provide valuable #data and insights to assess their viability and impact. This information helps shape the development of new regulations. ✨A joint #learning program should support regulators with #capacitybuilding, #knowledge transfer, and #technical assistance. This will improve #advocacy, engagement, and regulatory frameworks for online pharmacies. #articlesinhealth #digitalhealth #vchealthtechhub International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Somto Chloe Keluo-Udeke #october 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞: https://bit.ly/4hc6OpU 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚? Digital health in Africa is experiencing rapid growth, fueled by the continent’s unique healthcare challenges and the need for innovative solutions. Most topics in this space are focused on leveraging technology to bridge gaps in healthcare access, improve service delivery, and drive better patient outcomes. While topics like AI, interoperability, mHealth, and blockchain may be trendy, it is also important to know the basics. Which of these introductory topics would you like an in-depth session on?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 (𝐦𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡) 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚. In many parts of #Africa, especially in rural and underserved communities, access to quality maternal and child healthcare remains a challenge. The top five countries with high maternal mortality are Nigeria [67,000], India [35,000], the Democratic Republic of Congo [16,000], Ethiopia [14,420], and Tanzania [11,000] of which there are 4 African countries in the top five. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 [SDG-3] endeavors to reduce global maternal mortality to 70 per 100,000 live births, preventable deaths of newborns to 12 per live birth, and children under five years of age to as low as 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030. If the current mortality rate is not interfered with through new technological strategies, achieving SDG-3 in low- and middle-income countries might be impossible. The application of mHealth (mobile health) has the potential to remind, inform, and provide remote services to improve maternal and child health. Let’s explore notable ways Mobile Health (mHealth) has helped reduce maternal and child mortality in Africa. #DigitalHealth MOTECH Electrical Engineering Services Ezinne V. For the longest time, I wasn’t sure how I wanted my portfolio to look. I kept pushing it off, waiting for the “right” moment. Then, last night, something clicked. I was determined to get it done once and for all—and I did it. It’s not about having a perfect portfolio with endless projects. It’s about starting with what you have, and letting it evolve as you do. Supply Chain Officer @ Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network | Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Management

At the beginning of this year, I set out a goal to grow both spiritually and professionally. I remember hinting in my journal and to a couple of friends, colleagues, and family members that I wanted to focus on building a relationship with God. Well, it has been ten months of interesting experiences but I think the most noteworthy of experiences to share on this platform is on my job transition. Having worked for a drone tech company for over 2 years and played a critical role in the integration of drones into the Kenyan healthcare system, I felt I needed a bigger challenge that was aligned with my spiritual goals. And therefore when an offer from Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network (EPN) came in, it was a God-sent offer. Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network is a Christian non-profit organization whose mission is to support faith-based healthcare facilities and drug supply organizations to provide and promote just and compassionate quality Pharmaceutical services. I have been tasked to lead supply chain operations for faith-based facilities in Kenya and Nigeria with a focus on Maternal and Neonatal Healthcare funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. I believe that with God on my side and the experiences that I have garnered over the past few years, I will deliver immensely on this project Notable experiences that influenced the decision: - Streamlining blood supply chain systems for the Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority (KETTA) which introduced me into the world of maternal and neonatal healthcare with a focus on post-partum hemorrhage, stakeholder management, coordination of implementing partners and the process of developing and disseminating national level standards and guidelines. -My work as a community pharmacist at Portal Pharmacy that provided me with experience in patient care, health service delivery and aspects of business development. -My recent experience at Zipline that provided me with an understanding of the fundamentals of integrating innovative technologies into the African market, the power of data in supply chain operations, operational efficiency, and resource management. As Steve Jobs said, "You cannot connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backward. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in the future." Big thank you to the people who have believed in me and offered me opportunities and mentorship in the past couple of years.
