The early bird gets the fattest worm. Investing in yourself at the start of your career creates a powerful compound effect. By working hard, learning continuously, and expanding your network early on, you set the stage for long-term success and benefits. There is no better time to invest in yourself than now. “I've never had a company succeed where the CEO was loved by both parents," said one of my investors to me recently. As a seasoned investor who has run many funds, the sample size he’s talking about is large enough to provide such insights. But even beyond these numbers, there are lots of compelling statistics that show a high correlation between going through hardship in one’s earlier years and having higher outcomes later in life. Research shows 35% of CEOs in the US and 20% of CEOs in Britain have signs of dyslexia, compared with just 5–10% of the overall population. And ⅔ of British prime ministers and ⅓ of US presidents lost a parent when they were a child. While dyslexia results in people having difficulties reading and writing in their younger years, facing such adversities and overcoming the hardships can often be a springboard to future success. And while losing a parent or going through other life-changing traumas early on can create serious setbacks or wounds to heal, spiritual teacher and self-help author Eckhart Tolle alleges that those who experience serious trauma at the beginning of their life are actually at an advantage in that they are forced to do the work of self-development and healing, versus those who are just fine and never really have the push to “do the work.” Suffering can be a blessing; it forces growth. It can also make one a better problem solver, a very useful skill as a CEO. At Abundance360 last year, I had the fortune of connecting with Tony Robbins . He openly talks about the traumatic childhood he endured, a pressure that has fueled him into incredible success in his adult life. One Thanksgiving without food inspired him to provide a billion meals. This concept made me think. It seems the trend with the successful people I’ve observed; initially, we run away from the thing that traumatized us in our formative years. Or success is derived from a deep need to escape the circumstances that caused the wound, or disprove the voice that hurt us. But eventually, with much healing, a transition happens. We shift from running away from fear, to running toward abundance–toward love–toward something. It is important for entrepreneurs, and people in general, to have awareness of how early trauma is a motivation that pushes them into success, but be intentional about healing from what plagues them. Otherwise, we will eventually find ourselves led astray by the fear that trails those formative wounds, and unable to see objectively and clearly. Pain is a great motivator and great fuel. But chronic pain causes disabilities, complications, and prevents clear thinking. So you are successful because of your formative years, not in spite of it. But success itself will not necessarily heal whatever underlying trauma got you to where you are. Founders, don’t forget: your business growth will always be a direct reflection of your personal growth. Do the work, for your ability to continue on the path.
