🌍International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in collaboration with Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA), has launched the Africa Regional Hub for Fertilizer and Soil Health, a transformative initiative to boost agricultural productivity and food security amid climate challenges. With two-thirds of the continent's arable land degraded and fertilizer use significantly below global averages, this effort is vital for improving yields, reducing poverty, and safeguarding natural resources. EiA at Post AFSH Summit Roundtable Recap: Our EiA initiative lead, Dr. Bernard Vanlauwe, led a discussion on strategies to mobilize resources and coordinate efforts for sustainable soil health management across Africa. The CGIAR Excellence in Agronomy Initiative (EiA)'s commitment to advancing fertilizer and soil health initiatives is perfectly aligned with the broader goal of transforming agriculture in Africa and the global south. As a global initiative focused on delivering agronomic gains for millions of smallholder farming households, EiA continues to emphasize the importance of data-driven, scalable, and sustainable agricultural practices. We're two days into AFSF, and OCP Africa's participation has been incredibly insightful! On the plenary panel about fertilizer and soil health, Mehdi FILALI, SVP West Africa, highlighted OCP Group's efforts in implementing the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan. He emphasized three key initiatives supporting the 10-year action plan: 1- Partnership with USAID on "Space to Place" 2- Collaboration with The World Bank, ECOWAS Commission, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to launch the Fertilizer and Soil Health Regional Program for West Africa and the Sahel 3- Partnership with The World Bank on country packages for Benin, Togo, Guinea, Niger, and Mali, focusing on soil health, efficient fertilization, extension services, and youth empowerment in Agri-Tech. Sara DAHHANI, Agronomist Project Manager, moderated a side event on "Transforming Africa into a Science-Based Agricultural Powerhouse," where Joseph Kugbe, Head of Agronomy West Africa, discussed how OCP Africa is driving growth and improving food security and soil health across the continent through targeted R&D and collaborations with key stakeholders. During a discussion on innovation in support services organized by UNIDO, Anass KHANCHOUFI, our Managing Director for Rwanda, emphasized the role of innovation and extended services in improving food systems in Africa and how OCP Africa is developing tailored solutions adapted to local context. Exciting times ahead as we work together for a thriving agricultural future for Africa! #AFSForum2024 #Foodsystems
