7 things I learned from 7 years as a Software Engineer 1. Just because someone works at a big tech company doesn't mean they're better than you. Interviewing is very different skill than the actual job. I know so many exceptional engineers who work at companies you might not have heard about. 2. Becoming a Software Engineer isn't as easy as social media tells you. Everyone who has a laptop and internet connection can compete with you. There is no moat in Software Engineering. 3. You don't need to know everything as a Software Engineer. Every time I switch jobs, I have to learn new technologies. As a Software Engineer, you can always learn on the job. 4. You'll spend more time reading and debugging code than actually writing it. Now that ChatGPT is out, the ability to read, understand and debug code fast is even more important. 5. Better salary doesn't mean better job. When in doubt, choose people over money. If you work alongside better people, the money will follow. 6. Better salary also doesn't mean longer hours. Many people believe that if you work in big tech companies, you get better salary at the cost of longer hours. There are many high paying jobs that give you a great return on your time. 7. Levels don't always paint the correct picture. A senior in one team might be a junior in another. Stay humble and recognize that there's always something to learn from everyone. #softwaredevelopment #programming
