Whiteparish History Society Thursday 16th January, Our January meeting features Brian Margeretson with his talk. “Finding Grandma’s Farm”. Brian details his journey to seek out the remains of his great grandmother’s farm in the former East Germany in the summer of 2017. All meetings are in the Cowesfield Room at the Memorial Centre at 7:30 pm on the third Thursday of the month. Non-members are welcomed. If you are worrying that you have left it too late to get your free COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, then don’t. If you are eligible, you have up until 31 January to book in for your COVID-19 vaccination and flu jabs are available until 31 March. More than 420,000 COVID-19 vaccinations have been delivered this winter to people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, those who have an increased risk of getting seriously ill, and frontline health and care workers. But that still leaves 40% of those eligible who haven’t come forward for their free vaccination. In addition to the COVID-19 jabs, more than 595,000 flu vaccinations have also been administered. Getting a flu jab in January ensures that you're protected when the risk of contracting the flu is at its highest. Book your appointment via your GP, the NHS app, or by calling 119. All hospitals across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are currently seeing a surge in people needing care, as we face one of our busiest winter weeks. Hampshire Hospitals, who run Basingstoke and Winchester hospitals, have declared a critical incident due to the sustained pressures, which allows them to put measures in place to ensure services continue to run as safely as possible. There is currently a high number of unwell people needing hospital care, including with flu and other winter bugs. All NHS organisations across Hampshire and Isle of Wight are working together to ensure local people continue to get the best possible care. We are asking people to play their part by ensuring they are using the most appropriate services for their health needs. Some quick tips to help us help you as effectively as possible: - Get vaccinated, it is not too late to get your free flu or COVID-19 vaccination if you are eligible. - Remember the Emergency Department is for emergencies. - If you need urgent care, but it is not life-threatening, contact 111 first for advice on the best place to go. - Minor injuries or illnesses don’t need the Emergency Department and you’ll often be seen more quickly at a dedicated minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre. 111 can even book you in if you call them first. - Your local pharmacist can offer you instant advice and treatment for a range of minor illnesses and ailments - The NHS 111 mental health triage team provides mental health support 24/7 - Make use of online resources, like the NHS website, to check symptoms and get advice if you can. From midday yesterday (Tuesday 7 January) our gritters have been treating priority routes. These roads (1,831 miles) carry the majority of Hampshire’s traffic and include access to hospitals and other key emergency hubs, large schools and colleges, and major bus routes. Over 1,000 tonnes of de-icing salt has been used so far. Another gritting run is planned for tonight.
