Crews have issued safety advice after a fire was caused by sunlight reflecting off a magnifying glass. Firefighters from Newport were called to Brick Kiln Lane, Rickling Green this afternoon. The occupants had returned home and heard their smoke alarm sounding and called 999 immediately. When crews entered the property, they found the curtains on fire in the bedroom which had been caused by sunlight reflecting off a magnifying glass on the bedside table. Watch Manager Neil Byford said: "The occupants had a magnifying glass on the bedside table. "The sunlight came through the window, reflected off the glass and set fire to the curtains. "This incident shows how easy it is for magnifying or reflective objects to cause fires, even in winter when we don't think the sun is that strong. "Make sure mirrors or glass or crystal objects on your window sills, dressing tables or anywhere else in your home are out of direct sunlight." Crews ventilated the property.
