In North Shields this week we have started ground investigation works after a report of possible mining related damage to two homes. Due to access issues it was necessary to use a crane to deliver a drilling rig to the back garden of one of the properties so that ground samples can be taken and examined to see if the cause of the damage is due to historical mining in the area. We have also installed monitoring equipment at the properties to provide reassurance to the residents. We would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding whilst the drilling rig was being delivered. Our hardy gritting crews are again treating priority roads in all areas of North Yorkshire. Road surface temperatures will be well below zero with the risk of hoar and some icy patches. Please take extra care when travelling as gritting doesn't guarantee an ice or snow-free surface. Enough traffic needs to drive over a gritted road to grind the salt in and activate it. Post-flooding survey (December 5-8th 2024 and January 1-7th 2025 ) The Environment Agency issued a number of Flood Warnings and Flood Alerts across parts of Yorkshire in early December 2024 and early January 2025, including Bielby Beck at Bielby. We have a duty to warn and inform for river, coastal and tidal flooding, which we do through the Flood Warning Service. An important part of this service is to ensure that the Flood Alerts and Flood Warnings are issued as accurately as possible and we are providing communities with valuable time to prepare for flooding. The Bielby Beck Flood Warning is relatively new, created in 2022, and we are keen to provide an opportunity for feedback in order to improve its accuracy. Where possible we also work closely with our East Riding of Yorkshire Council partners to share post flood information and to gather on-the-ground information. Gritting update It's going to be very cold night once again across North Yorkshire so our gritters will be out treating roads across the county. Temperatures will once again fall below zero and there is a yellow warning for ice in eastern and coastal areas. A number of you have asked us in recent days about our gritters and and where we have been treating roads and paths. Here, Karl Battersby, our corporate director for Environment, explains what we've been doing to keep North Yorkshire moving and how we target some of our most vulnerable locations. This includes having gritters out treating roads 24 hours a day, as well as using farm contractors alongside others to salt and clear pavements and paths.
