Shipwikineni fights back against legal costs after case against Swapo falters: Hertta-Maria Amutenja Reinhold Shipwikineni has raised objections to the legal costs awarded against him after his case against Swapo and its presidential candidate, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, was struck off the court roll last October. The High Court in December ordered Shipwikineni to pay N$382 768 in legal costs, which included N$158 500 for lawyer fees and N$224 268 in disbursement fees. The court ordered Shipwikineni to pay the respondents’ legal fees despite striking the case from the roll. Shipwikineni is now objecting to the legal cost award, stating it is unfair to hold him personally responsible for the costs, especially when there were five applicants in the case. “The problem was not caused by the court but rather by the non-compliance with the rules of the High Court by our previous representative,” Shipwikineni explained. He also expressed concern about the fact that he personally received the legal costs, even though the case involved multiple applicants. “The demand for me to pay the legal costs in my personal capacity represents unfairness,” he added. Shipwikineni last week filed a notice of rejection against the bill of costs, with a hearing set for 3 February. He intends to contest the requested amount, claiming that the total is unfair. “The high court did not determine the amount I must pay, but rather, it was demanded by the Swapo self-proclaimed lawyers after the court order,” he said. The case, filed by Shipwikineni and four other applicants, sought to nullify Nandi-Ndaitwah’s nomination and demand an extraordinary congress to replace the late President Hage Geingob. However, the court struck the matter off the roll last year, ruling it was improperly constituted and lacked necessary documentation, such as the return of service documents. Shipwikineni, alongside Petrus Ndeshipanda Shituula, Joshua Vaino Martins, Erich Chrismann Shivute, and Aina Kalimba Angula, had argued that the Swapo central committee violated the party’s constitution by postponing the congress to 2025 instead of holding it within three months of Geingob’s death. They also claimed Nandi-Ndaitwah’s nomination was ultra vires and violated Swapo’s internal rules. “The central committee ignored constitutional provisions and acted unfairly and unreasonably in deferring the congress,” Shipwikineni said. The court also heard that Nandi-Ndaitwah, who was officially registered as Swapo’s presidential candidate, had allegedly breached internal party rules. Shipwikineni contended that the second respondent’s appointment was ultra vires and called for her nomination and appointments to the National Assembly list to be reviewed and set aside. https://lnkd.in/dwV6rthq #Shipwikineni #Swapo #LegalCosts #HighCourt #Namibia

Youth warned against internship scam: Niël Terblanché The Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service has issued a stern warning to young people against a fraudulent internship programme circulating on social media, exploiting job-seekers’ desperation. According to a notice issued by the ministry’s public relations office on Tuesday, the scam, falsely claiming to represent it, is enticing individuals to apply for an “Internship Program 2025” by clicking on a suspicious link. The notice states that the fraudulent post, which lists various duty stations across the country – including Windhoek, Katima Mulilo, Divundu, Oshakati, Khomas, Rundu, and Otjiinene – urges potential applicants to use the link https://lnkd.in/dFHtKybB. It employs a manipulative message, “I have applied and got mine,” to lure victims into believing the programme is legitimate. The scammers then use the personal information obtained from unsuspecting young people to commit several kinds of cybercrimes. The ministry categorically denied any association with this so-called internship opportunity, stressing that all official internship vacancies for the Ministry concluded on 31 December 2024. “This claim of a 2025 internship program is false. The public is strongly cautioned to refrain from clicking on the link or engaging with these fraudulent posts,” the warning from the ministry reads. In addition to debunking the scam, the Ministry has advised the public, particularly young job-seekers, to exercise extreme caution online. It warned against providing personal or financial information in response to unsolicited communications. “Young people are encouraged to verify the authenticity of opportunities by consulting our verified social media platforms, shared under the username @officialmsyns,” the ministry stated. The warning notice also urged individuals encountering such scams to report them to relevant authorities for investigation, underscoring the importance of vigilance in protecting oneself from online fraud. According to the ministry, the latest scam is a demonstration of the growing trend of cybercriminals targeting Namibia’s youth, particularly as many face challenges in securing employment. “This is a critical reminder of the dangers of engaging with unverified information online,” the notice reads. https://lnkd.in/dH_zpJgC #YouthAwareness #InternshipScam #JobScams #FraudAlert #CareerAdvice

German meat products prohibited from entering Namibia: Niël Terblanché The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform has imposed a ban on the importation and transit of cloven-hoofed animals and their products from Germany in order to protect Namibia’s livestock industry. The restriction follows a confirmed outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in Germany on 10 January 2025. The disease has been confirmed in a herd of water buffalo near Brandenberg, in the Markisch Odèland district of Germany (to the west of Berlin). Announcing the measure, Johannes Shoopala, the acting chief veterinary officer, said the ban aims to safeguard Namibia’s prized animal health status. “This decision is in line with the provisions of the Animal Health Act 1 of 2011, which prioritises the health and safety of our livestock,” Dr Shoopala said. He stressed that the directive was not only necessary but urgent given the potential risk posed by the outbreak of the bovine disease in Europe. The suspension covers a wide range of items, including fresh and frozen meat, unpasteurised milk, untreated hides and skins, and live cloven-hoofed animals. Shoopala added that all previously issued veterinary import permits for these commodities have been revoked. He reiterated that certain processed products could still be imported under strict conditions. “Pasteurised milk, treated hides and skins, and processed meat products will be allowed, provided they meet the recommendations of the World Organisation for Animal Health and are deemed safe,” he explained. He added that this balanced approach ensures that importers adhering to international standards are not unduly penalised. Shoopala urged importers and stakeholders to remain vigilant and to cooperate with the Veterinary Services Directorate. “Importers should ensure full compliance and seek guidance when necessary. Protecting our livestock sector requires a collective effort,” he added. In this regard, the agriculture ministry urged importers to contact its offices for inquiries, further clarification, and stakeholder engagement until the situation returns to normal. According to Shoopala, the decisive action is a demonstration of the importance Namibia ascribes to the safeguarding of national livestock resources from external threats and ensuring the sector remains resilient in the face of potential crises. https://lnkd.in/ddD5YKv4 #Namibia #Livestock #Agriculture #AnimalHealth #FootAndMouthDisease
