WWF-Malaysia is a national conservation trust affiliated to the WWF global network. Working to promote harmony between human beings and nature for four decades, the organisation to date runs more than 90 projects covering a diverse range of environmental protection and nature conservation work in Malaysia. WWF-Malaysia has come a long way since its coming into being on the 13th of January 1972. In the early days we had solely focused on wildlife conservation such as saving endangered species like the tigers and turtles, today our work has extended to encompass marine and forest conservation as well; from to protecting our highlands and forests, and also our rivers and seas. We now also undertake scientific field research, public awareness campaigns, business and industry engagement, environmental education as well as policy advocacy. WWF-Malaysia works hand in hand with local communities to improve their livelihoods while enabling their participation in conservation as well as training and supporting other environmental protection organisations in Malaysia. We are privileged to have more than 70,000 supporters who interact with us on Facebook; about 52,000 individual supporters who fund 34 critical projects; and even more financial backing from the corporations. With your continued support, we stand the best chance of saving our biodiversity as well as achieving sustainable management of our natural resources, to safeguard our good quality of life, and that of our children and future generations. WWF thanks you for your valuable support.

In the fight to conserve orangutans and their forest homes, restoring degraded forests is both an art and a science. Our approach varies based on the area's vegetation cover. We start by planting fast-growing pioneer tree species in open spaces like grasslands or areas with less than 40% tree cover. These trees quickly form a protective canopy essential for preventing soil erosion, suppressing invasive weeds, and creating a cool, shaded microclimate where native wildlife, including orangutans, can thrive. As this initial layer establishes itself, we introduce the slower-growing, dipterocarp species. This species ensures the forest’s resilience and biodiversity over time, providing the complex structure and fruiting cycles that sustain orangutans and countless other species. This science-based strategy isn’t just about planting trees. It is about rebuilding lasting ecosystems and bringing back what was originally there. Together, we’re ensuring these iconic forests remain a sanctuary for wildlife and a legacy for generations to come. #SabahLandscapesProgramme #ForestRestoration #OrangutanConservation #LivingLandscapes #wwfmy

Happy Human Rights Day! At WWF-Malaysia, we honour this day by reaffirming our commitment to upholding dignity, equity, and inclusion in all our conservation efforts. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” inspires us to take action and ensure human rights are at the heart of everything we do. Together, we can create a just and sustainable future for people and nature. Safeguards are at the heart of WWF's mission, ensuring our work protects human rights, improves livelihoods, and delivers better outcomes for people and nature. WWF’s Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) provides a unified approach to managing risks, upholding standards, and addressing concerns effectively. Over the past three months, WWF-Malaysia’s Sabah Landscapes Programme conducted training within two areas we actively work in - Tabin Landscape and Tawau-Kunak Landscape. Participants, including those involved in restoration work, including representatives from the Sabah Forestry Department, and members from local cooperatives comprising palm oil smallholders and medium-sized growers, gained in-depth insights into respecting human rights, promoting gender equality, and understanding Free, Prior, and Informed Consent . The sessions also provided knowledge on applying ESSF principles and managing complaints effectively through established Complaints Resolution Mechanism guidelines. By embedding safeguards in everything we do, we’re building stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable conservation outcomes. WWF-Malaysia is proud to be a part of the 4th Borneo Colloquium on Environmental Justice alongside the Sabah Courts, Sabah State Attorney-General’s Chambers, and dedicated state agencies. Representing Dr. Henry Chan, Sheelasheena Damian, WWF-Malaysia’s Policy Analyst and Legal Counsel, expressed gratitude to our partners who made this event possible and underscored our shared commitment to protecting Borneo's natural heritage. This year’s theme, “Strengthening the Criminal Justice System on the Environment: Best Practices and Challenges in Sabah,” is timely. As we tackle real challenges in environmental law enforcement, this colloquium unites state agencies to exchange best practices and address obstacles together, advancing environmental justice. Congratulations to the Sabah State Attorney General’s Chambers for launching a new Enforcement and Prosecution section—a key step forward in strengthening State law enforcement! WWF-Malaysia is honoured to collaborate with the judiciary on initiatives like sentencing guidelines for wildlife and forest crimes and developing SOPs with the Sabah Wildlife Department, Sabah Forestry Department, and Sabah Parks. Together, we’re building a stronger framework to protect Sabah’s ecosystems. Environmental justice is both a legal and moral duty. Together, we’re empowering action to refine enforcement and prosecution practices for a more just, effective system that safeguards our environment. #EnvironmentalJustice #wwfmy #TogetherPossible

Alongside our colleagues from WWF-Germany, we welcomed valued partners from Beiersdorf and Evonik, whose support drives our conservation and sustainable palm oil initiatives. Together, we visited the Tabin Landscape, an area vital for wildlife protection, forest restoration, and responsible palm oil production. Here are some highlights from the trip: We engaged in important discussions with the Sabah JASPO (Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil) Initiative and the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) Labour Working Group, on improving labor standards for fair and safe working conditions and strengthening jurisdictional alignment. We explored the Bagahak Ecological Corridor, a 58-hectare stretch of land set aside for conservation by Sawit Kinabalu, that connects Silabukan Forest Reserve with Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Having supported these efforts since 2022, our visitors were delighted to actively contribute to the restoration by planting trees! At another project site, BORA (Bringing Back Our Rare Animals) shared efforts to restore banteng (Bos javanicus) habitat. Remarkably, numbers have doubled since the project began in this safe and productive environment, thereby contributing significantly to the conservation of this endangered species. We visited Kampung Teburi to see the cost-effective yet pioneering early warning system, designed to manage human-elephant conflicts. Discussions with local cooperatives comprising small-holders and medium-sized growers managing around 1,000 hectares highlighted the potential of sharing premiums between European buyers and Sabah growers to drive RSPO group certification for sustainable palm oil. The trip concluded with a tour of KLK’s palm kernel crusher mill, a place where a lot of certified sustainable palm kernel oil (CSPKO) is produced, which later becomes manufactured into beauty products, such as Beiersdorf's NIVEA Creme. Overall, the visit highlighted the power of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals and the essential connection between global partners and on-the-ground efforts in Sabah. A heartfelt thank you to Beiersdorf and Evonik for their continued support and partnership in driving meaningful change. Tag: Beiersdorf

Forty participants, including plantation workers and community members from around Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Silabukan Forest Reserve, joined us in Lahad Datu for the Wildlife Awareness Outreach Programme. These two protected areas, surrounded by agricultural lands, are home to a rich diversity of wildlife—some unfamiliar to nearby communities. Throughout the day, WWF-Malaysia and the Sabah Wildlife Department offered an in-depth look at local wildlife, focusing on lesser-known and protected species, while providing guidance on how to avoid unintentional harm. Participants also shared their experiences with wildlife, including challenges related to human-wildlife interactions. Through the Sabah Landscapes Programme, our teams aim to inspire more people to become citizen scientists and active stewards of their environment. Together, we can foster a harmonious coexistence between communities and wildlife in the Tabin Landscape. #wwfmy #TogetherPossible #TabinLandscape #LivingLandscapes
