Education is #foreverychild. Our team had the privilege to visit the Cahaya Learning Centre operated by Cahaya Society that provides alternative education for stateless, undocumented, & marginalized children. The centre teaches basic reading, writing, counting, philosophy, and music amongst other life skills. The children we met were hungry to learn and had so much to teach us. Stay tuned for a full article on the experience.

Imagine a seven-year-old girl who has experienced domestic violence, a twelve-year-old boy who has suffered sexual abuse or a fourteen-year-old girl who is a victim of physical abuse. Now imagine these same children, already traumatized by their experiences, being expected to recount their stories in court... Even adults often can't face this. It's countless times worse for children. But we can make it easier. https://lnkd.in/gMpDAYtF

Over the weekend, UNICEF Malaysia witnessed a remarkable display of hospitality and community spirit at The Westin Desaru Coast Resort and The Els Club Desaru Coast. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Marriott Business Council of Malaysia and Singapore for the successful inaugural charity golf tournament and gala. The event has brought together staff members, suppliers, and guests to support our work in building climate resilience for children. With UNICEF’s 20-year-long global partnership with Marriott International (https://lnkd.in/gyxZ8Nv2), it was inspiring to see this passion for children's wellbeing extending to the country units and ready to make an impact together. Our appreciation also goes to Dato YASMIN YUSUFF who not only volunteered her talent as the event emcee, but also champion our cause within her sphere of influence. In Malaysia, of the 41,000 refugee children of school-going age registered with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Malaysia, only 34 percent have access to informal education. Refugee children are children and education is a fundamental right, yet many refugee children are not in school. Disruptions in their educational journey leave them without recognized credentials, social networks, mentors, or peer support, as they move and settle in unfamiliar places. Without access to formal education, refugee children struggle to fulfil their dreams. As we commemorate World Refugee Day, let's remember that every child, no matter their circumstances, need access to essential support and services like healthcare, education, and social protection. Together, we can work towards strengthening inclusive national systems that benefit all children. Photo © UNICEF Malaysia/2024/Ahmad Yusni

"Every child, no matter their legal status, has a right to a childhood and the full range of rights guaranteed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We believe that change is possible for children working in and around plantations if all sectors – public and private – work together to prevent and address the root causes leading to child labour, and to promote remedy when it occurs," - Robert Gass, UNICEF Representative in Malaysia. Children work on plantations because their families struggle financially. Limited access to formal education, to child protection and childcare services on oil palm plantations worsen the situation. We're working with the European Union in Malaysia and, International Labour Organization (ILO), to launch an 18-month programme aimed at promoting socio-economic inclusion and protecting the rights of children in Tawau’s oil palm plantations.
