Hello connections! For the past 3 months, I've had the incredible opportunity to become an English #volunteer tutor under Teach For Malaysia, as part of the Education Recovery Tutoring Initiative (ERTI). This initiative aims to tackle the education issues, especially on the education loss and inequities faced by urban poor, neglected and underrepresented communities across Kuala Lumpur. Education is a fundamental principle that many nations strive for, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDG) Goal 4: #QualityEducation, which asserts that all people should have access to quality education. Yet, it's often overlooked that children from families at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid are disproportionally impacted by the flaws in our education system. Programmes like ERTI are among the many that are working tirelessly to bridge this gap and I firmly believe ERTI deserves more recognition for its impacts on our society. Not only it provides academic support to the children, but also raises awareness among the public and volunteers on the pressing social issues that demand our attention. Let's continue supporting initiatives like ERTI that strive to create a more #inclusive and #equitable education for all children throughout Malaysia. P/S: faces blurred due to privacy reason

🌟End of my Volunteering with Teach For Malaysia🌟 Last Saturday was my last day of #volunteering for the Education Recovery Tutoring Initiative (ERTI). It was truly an #incredible and eye-opening experience for me. 💡 Education is beyond than just academics. It's about the passion to learn, explore, and improve - encouraging and believing that everyone has the potential to #grow. Seeing the students that I mentored discovered the #joy of learning #math and #confidence when answering questions, truly made me happy for them. Thank you very much to the amazing Teach For Malaysia team, volunteers, APU's lecturers and colleagues for the incredible love and support. Together we make an impactful difference💫. #quality #education #TeachforMalaysia #impact #community

Making an Impact: Volunteering with Teach For Malaysia (Oct - Dec 2024) 🇲🇾📚✏️💡🙋🏻♂️🎓 I had the incredible opportunity to teach English to students as a volunteer with Teach for Malaysia. What made this experience even more exciting was using creative teaching methods to engage with them. We used snake and ladder, card games, “hot potato” game, colourful presentation slides and even used a dollhouse to help them learn about different rooms in a house. Whether it was talking about the bedroom, kitchen, or living room, the students loved exploring each space and describing what they saw. It just goes to show that sometimes, the simplest tools can spark the most creative learning. Education is not just about imparting knowledge, it's about building confidence and empowering the next generation to dream bigger and achieve more. It's been a rewarding journey to see how the students grew over time, and I'm happy to have been part of their journey. ✨ Huge thanks to Teach for Malaysia for providing such a platform, and to the students for reminding me of the importance of lifelong learning. Here's to more inspiring journeys ahead! ✨ #TeachForMalaysia #Volunteering #VolunteerExperience

A few weeks ago, I discovered the crispness of Malaysia’s morning air while heading to a school in Kuang at 6.30 am. I arrived at the school by 7:00 am. and was warmly welcomed by Cikgu Nusaibah, a Teach For Malaysia's Felo Guru Muda. As a future TFM Fellow, my three days there were vital for me to understand what the environment on the ground looks like but I left with more than observations, I gained priceless life stories that will stick with me. As I was walking to the school’s office, the setting brought me back to my school days—parents at the gates saying goodbyes and students laughing and greeting each other. Hearing “Jom, jalan sama-sama” reminded me of my memories with my school friends back then. “Terima kasih kerana datang ke sekolah kami. Saya harap Cik Izzah dan Cik Chloe boleh bantu Cikgu Nusaibah dalam kelas walaupun 3 hari sahaja bersama kami,” said Pn. Fatimah, the principal. Three days was short, but it gave me and my partner for the week, Chloe Mosundu a glimpse of ground realities before stepping into our classroom next year. We began the day in Cikgu Nusaibah’s Year 5 English class. Some students struggled with the lesson, and she explained some of them were experiencing learning loss. Despite the challenges, the teachers and the school received strong parental support through the PTA, where alumni-turned-parents ensure all students receive extra literacy and numeracy classes every Friday. The second day deepened my connection with the school. In Pn. In Fatimah’s Year 6 Sejarah class, students explored their passions through lessons on National Pride Sport. Then, a boy enthusiastically shared, “Saya nak jadi pemain badminton, cikgu!”. His words echoed in the room, and for a moment, I was transported back to my school days. I remembered the excitement of discovering passions, and the feeling of believing anything was possible. Later, the faint sound of a piano-led me to Cikgu Hanis, who has taught music for 14 years. In just an hour, his words struck a chord: “Jurang pendidikan tu akan selalu ada, tapi apa yang kita boleh buat, kita duduk dengan anak murid ikut pace dia.” His philosophy aligns with my belief that education unlocks potential, embraces individuality, and tailors learning to each student’s journey. As I left Kuang on the third day, I couldn't help but feel grateful. This 83-year-old school is full of history and it is more than just a place to learn. To me, this school is a reminder that even in the humble corners of our nation, dreams are nurtured one lesson at a time. I’m honoured to have been part of its story, even briefly. My time there wasn’t just about observing, it was a reminder of something bigger, a belief close to my heart: that one day, every child in Malaysia will have access to the quality education they truly deserve.

Starting tomorrow, my manager will be going on a 2-months sabbatical leave. We had a chat today. She told me, please know that your hard work is seen by many. And I shared with her, I'll try my best to hold the fort. But, most of all, I would like to let you know, we've got a great team, full of energy! I'm hopeful for the team, I know, the team is going to start the year with full force. You'll come back to a stronger team. 💪 2024, in hindsight, wasn't too bad of a year. There were setbacks, frictions, achievements and relationships built. And, my biggest learning is, clarity is such an important element that brings great leadership and empowerment to a team. It took me 1 year to realise this, and I hope it is not too late to practice this next year for a stronger, more cohesive team! I'm grateful to have walk on this journey with a team leader who allows me to have healthy debates with and also spending time in coaching me. I'm grateful for a team who prioritises teamwork and victory. And for me to be a better leader for the team, it's time for me to strengthen my leadership muscle. I'm looking forward to see what more we can do as a team! Teach For Malaysia #TalentandOperations #reflections #leadership
