  • Enhancing Aviation Safety in Southeast Asia🌏✈️ In a landmark move for the aviation industry, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are set to launch a pioneering Regional Aviation Safety Data and Information Sharing Initiative. This collaboration marks the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region and aims to fortify aviation safety as air travel bounces back from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative was conceived during the inaugural Asia-Pacific Summit for Aviation Safety held in Singapore in 2023, where leaders recognized the vital need for close cooperation among civil aviation authorities. By sharing de-identified safety data and information, these countries will collaboratively identify safety hazards and trends, developing effective measures to manage safety risks. On 16 October 2024, key aviation officials from each of the five participating nations formalized their commitment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the 59th Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation in Cebu, Philippines. This MOU sets the stage for the initiative to be launched by the end of this year. The shared data will be sourced from each nation’s mandatory reporting systems, covering both international and domestic commercial air transport incidents. This cross-border approach ensures timely identification and resolution of safety issues, thereby enhancing the overall safety of air operations. To facilitate smooth implementation, the participating states will collaboratively develop a “Procedural Handbook” that outlines data governance protocols, including security, protection, retention and destruction measures. In this framework, all states will act as Data Contributors, while Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) will assume the role of Data Custodian, with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) serving as the Data Analyst. As shared by Dato’ Captain Norazman Mahmud, CEO of CAAM, “Air transport is at the heart of global economic growth. Therefore, ensuring the highest level of safety and security of air operation and creating safer and more sustainable skies is paramount. Through this collaborative initiative by the States’ regulators of the aviation industry, the ability to address safety risks proactively while fostering sustainable aviation practices are enhanced. By sharing safety data and insights, we can ensure the highest safety standards can be achieved while contributing to a greener future for aviation. Together, we are laying the foundation for a resilient, safe, and environmentally responsible aviation sector across the Asia-Pacific region.” #TeamCAAM #SafeSustainableSkies #AviationSafety
