A testament to the raptures made possible by guitar pedals and Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell’s intermeshed voices, Slowdive’s third EP put the band in the hazy vanguard of the shoegaze scene. “Catch the Breeze” sets a dream-pop template as passages of gossamer-light delicacy swell into a thundercloud of reverb and feedback. Goswell’s blissed-out vocals and the disorienting phasing effects make “Shine” equally intoxicating. Yet Slowdive can use a lighter touch, too, paring down the wall of sound on the eerie “Albatross”.
