Canes Earn 3-0 Sweep over Bulls
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20 University of Miami volleyball team (6-2) swept the Buffalo Bulls (3-7), 3-0, Sunday afternoon in the Covelli Center.
The Hurricanes notched 46 kills on a .354 clip, 45 digs, nine blocks and seven service aces to claim the victory. Sophomore Grace Lopez and junior Flormarie Heredia Colon shared spotlight in kills, with Lopez earning 14 and Heredia Colon tallying 13.
Miami started strong with a 13-7 lead after going on a 6-1 run and earning back-to-back service aces from redshirt freshman Ariana Rodriguez. The Hurricanes then went on a 6-0 run with senior Yaidaliz Rosado behind the service line with four different Canes claiming a kill. In a dominant fashion with 14 kills and three blocks, Miami took set one, 25-12, over Buffalo.
The Bulls controlled the start of set two, with a 7-1 lead. Sophomore Ava Carney picked up her fifth kill of the match to get things going for the Hurricanes and only trail 10-12. Heredia Colon tied the set at 21 after a kill, followed by a block from Rodriguez and Wilson to take the lead. Miami earned its second set, 25-22, after rallying from behind.
The Hurricanes maintained the momentum in the third set, earning a 4-0 scoring run with Lopez claiming three kills within the first four points. Heredia Colon notched a block, kill and ace to extend Miami’s lead to 13-5. With the team securing 16 kills and 3.5 blocks, the Hurricanes grabbed the final set, 25-12.
Miami will host its first matches of the season at the 305 Challenge, featuring Arkansas, Texas Tech and FIU on Sept. 19-21, at the Knight Sports Complex.
