Effects of antioxidants (gallic acid (GA), propyl gallate (PG) and butyl hydroxyanisole (BHA)) on... more Effects of antioxidants (gallic acid (GA), propyl gallate (PG) and butyl hydroxyanisole (BHA)) on mechanical properties, water solubility, melting point temperature (Tm) of rice flour/cassava starch film blends with sorbitol were investigated. All films forming solution were casted and dried at room temperature. Film blended with GA showed higher tensile strength and folding endurance but lower percent elongation than control film blend. Tensile strength of film blended with PG and film blended with BHA were not significantly different (p GT 0.05) comparing with control film. Film blended with GA showed higher water solubility than control film, film blended with PG and film blended with BHA, respectively, because GA had higher polarity than PG and BHA, respectively. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) thermographs showed a single peak for all film blends with and without antioxidants confirming their homogeneity. Sugarcane straw fiber (SSF) samples were prepared by chemical pulping (CP) and steam explosion (S... more Sugarcane straw fiber (SSF) samples were prepared by chemical pulping (CP) and steam explosion (STE). CP (5, 10, 15% NaOH + 0.2% w/w anthraquinone at 121 °C for 1 h) and STE pressure (1.77, 1.96, and 2.16 MPa at 220 °C for 4 min) SSF trays were molded with a hydraulic hot-press machine at 120 °C, 7 min, and 1.72 MPa. The yield (%) of SSF from STE (54–60% dry basis (db.)) was higher than CP (32–48% db.). STE trays had greater tensile strength than CP. However, STE’s elongation and compression strength was lower than CP tray samples. The trays made from SSF using STE had less swelling in thickness, longer water wetting time, and a higher water contact angle than those made from CP. The micrographs displayed a smaller size of SSF obtained in STE than the CP. The appearance and area of peaks in ATR-FTIR spectra and XRD diffractograms, respectively, revealed that the STE trays had a larger residual lignin content from the lignin study and a lower crystallinity index than the CP trays. Effect of NaOH concentration on the sorption isotherm of carboxymethyl rice starch (CMSr) films w... more Effect of NaOH concentration on the sorption isotherm of carboxymethyl rice starch (CMSr) films was investigated. Sorption isotherms are important for predicting moisture sorption properties of the films via moisture sorption empirical models. The moisture sorptions isotherm of CMSr films synthesized with different NaOH concentrations (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% w/v) were studied at various relative humidity (16, 35, 55 and 76% RH), at 25±1C. The equilibrium moisture content of the films increased dramatically above aw = 0.6. Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Oswin sorption models were fitted to the experimental data. The results showed that the increase in NaOH concentration caused a decrease in the monolayer water content (M0) of the films. The GAB model was found to be the best-fit model for CMSr films at aw 0.1-0.76, 25±1 C.

Postharvest quality and antioxidant activity of fresh tea shoots ( Camellia sinensis ) in sealed ... more Postharvest quality and antioxidant activity of fresh tea shoots ( Camellia sinensis ) in sealed polypropylene bags under different temperatures (5, 10, 15 °C and room temperature; 25°C) were determined. After storage, fresh tea shoots were analyzed for weight loss, color changes, respiration rate, antioxidant activity (DPPH assay) and total polyphenol (TP) content. There were no differences in percentage of weight loss of the fresh tea shoots stored at 5 °C and 10 °C for 20 days. The color illustrated by a* and hue values of fresh tea shoots stored at 5 °C remained unchanged in green color up to 20 days. Respiration rate of fresh tea shoots at room temperature was significantly higher than those stored at low temperatures. Tea shoots stored at 5 °C had the lowest respiration rate up to 6 days. This study aimed to investigate the preparation of soy protein isolated (SPI) cutlery incorporate... more This study aimed to investigate the preparation of soy protein isolated (SPI) cutlery incorporated with 5-20% (w/w) crude morning glory stem fiber (MGSF). SPI cutlery samples without and with MGSF were subjected to hydraulic hot press molding at 160 °C for 5 min pressing time. SPI with 5% MGSF showed decreased lightness values compared to the control SPI (without MGSF) (p<0.05). Flexural modulus attained in SPI with 5% MGSF was higher and subsequently showed decreases in impact strength and compression load compared to the control SPI (p<0.05). SPI with 5% MGSF sample showed slightly lower water absorption followed by decreases in degree of swelling and solubility with that of the control SPI (p<0.05). Micrographs revealed 5% MGSF formed uniform matrix with SPI in comparison to the control and other treatments that showed cracks with the increased fiber addition. ZnONPs was synthesized by mixing 15% (w/v) pineapple peel extract with 1 M of zinc acetate solution. Nanoparticles were characterized by using the UV spectrophotometric method and the result showed the UV absorption peak of ZnONPs at 370 nm. The antifungal activity of ZnONPs in various concentration (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 % w/v) was studied by disk diffusion method. The minimal inhibitory concentration of ZnONPs against Alternaria alternata was 20% (w/v).
