Penny Mordaunt is gearing up to go head-to-head with Labour’s Angela Rayner to try and convince the UK that the Conservatives should stay in Number 10.

The Leader of the House of Commons will be facing the Labour deputy in the BBC’s first televised General Election debate this evening.

Members of the audience will be able to ask questions of representatives from all major parties as Mishal Husain hosts the debate.

Stephen Flynn from the SNP, Daisy Cooper from the Lib Dems, Carla Denyer from the Green Party, Nigel Farage from Reform UK, and Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid will also take part.

But who is Ms Mordaunt and what is her political background?

We take a closer look at the woman chosen to represent the Tories in the lead-up to one of the party’s most crucial elections in recent history.

Penelope ‘Penny’ Mordaunt was born in Torquay, Devon in 1973. She has two brothers: her twin James, and a younger brother named Edward.

Ms Mordaunt was educated at Oaklands Roman Catholic Comprehensive School in Waterlooville, Hampshire and studied drama at the Victoryland Theatre School.

To pay for her university degree, she worked at a Johnson and Johnson’s factory and as a magician’s assistant.

She graduated from the University of Reading with upper second class honours in Philosophy, before working in various sectors, including as Head of Foreign Press for George W. Bush’s presidential campaign.

Ms Mordaunt first ran for parliament in her hometown of Portsmouth in 2005 but lost to Labour’s Sarah McCarthy-Fry.

She stood again in 2010 and won the seat of Portsmouth North with a majority of more than 7,000 votes.

She achieved ministerial rank under David Cameron in 2014 and 2016 and was appointed as Minister of State for Disabled People, Work and Health when Theresa May took power in 2016.

In 2019, she became the first female Secretary of State for Defence – but was demoted under Boris Johnson’s leadership.

In 2020, she became the Paymaster General, and in 2021 was instead appointed as Minister of State at the Department for International Trade.

She was one of the candidates during the Conservative leadership race back in summer 2022 but was eliminated in the fifth round.

Following Liz Truss’s victory on September 6, Ms Mordaunt was appointed as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council.

She kept her positions following Ms Truss’s brief time as PM once Rishi Sunak took the reins.
