GTA 6 – will it take till 2037 to see GTA 7? (Rockstar Games)

The parent company of Rockstar Games has been talking about the future and surprisingly they have made a tongue-in-cheek reference to GTA 7.

GTA 6 is clearly going to be absolutely massive, not just in terms of other video games but every other comparable form of entertainment. At some point though, after it’s released next year, thoughts will begin to turn to what developer Rockstar Games will do next.

Red Dead Redemption 3 seems the most obvious answer but, surprisingly, parent company Take-Two has already brought up the possibility of GTA 7 – albeit in a joke about what Rockstar will be doing for the next 10 years.

No matter what else, Rockstar will obviously be working on lots of DLC for GTA Online 2 (and perhaps even single-player content for the story campaign) but Take-Two has been hinting about other possibilities beyond just that.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was speaking at the recent TD Cowen 52nd Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, when he was asked about what Rockstar Games might be working on in the future.

Zelnick interrupted the question with a quizzical ‘GTA 7?’ and while that was clearly intended as a joke it does mean that, technically, it’s the first time anyone has officially acknowledged the possibility.

The host then continued by suggesting that Rockstar ‘would prefer not to have another 12 year gap between major iterations of their franchise.’ He then suggested that Rockstar would probably want to work on things that weren’t GTA during the next 10 years, before asking Zelnick how he could help facilitate that.

Unfortunately, Zelnick’s reply didn’t really address any of those issues and instead he just pointed out that Rockstar had been very busy with GTA Online in the last 12 years, despite having made so few other games.

’I do think given the scale of that label [i.e. Rockstar Games] – it’s a huge company itself – there isn’t much more to be done. … There’s 12 years where Rockstar has been putting out a mass amount of content. And another little title called Red Dead.’

As much as fans might wish otherwise the launch of GTA 6 probably isn’t going to lead to lots of new non-GTA titles, with Red Dead Redemption 3 being the only near certainty.

Zelnick was slightly more explicit when talking about why no PC version of GTA 6 has been announced yet, even though that’s normal for Rockstar.

‘The lack of an announcement is not something that could be set in stone as near as I could tell, because the only thing that happens after the lack of an announcement is an announcement, I suppose, or a continuing lack of an announcement, I guess that could happen too. It doesn’t seem to me that either would be set in stone,’ he said, in the most confusing way possible – as transcribed by fansite RockstarINTEL.

‘But Rockstar has an approach to platforms which we’ve seen before, and they’ll make more announcements in due time. I do believe that the right strategy for our business is to be where the consumer is, and historically what this company has done is address consumers anywhere they are, on any platform that makes sense over time.’

That in itself all but confirms a PC version of GTA 6, but it’s only ever been a question of when not if.
